    Explorer I - interesting article

I came across the, seemingly quite old, article below on timezone reviewing a 14270 and was quite surprised by its negative tone. Are these opinions commonly accepted with the 14270s? I haven't read quite such a scathing review of an Explorer before!

That's quite an infamous and often referenced review.
    Personally, I think its balls.

Odes doesn't like the oversized markers and hands, which for him, give a cramped and busy appearance to the Explorer.

How old is this article now? 18, 20 years old?
...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!

    Rolex Explorer

Just purchased a New Rolex Explorer and I am very impressed with the quality of the watch

This is the first Rolex I have owned and I'm very pleased with it and can now understand the high esteem people place on the watch. Incidentally I purchased the watch from iconic watches in Blackburn there service was 2nd to none I would thoroughly recommend them and I saved nearly £750on buying the watch from AD

One of the most interesting points he makes is how the bracelet insert and case don't appear to fit well. And from photos I can begin to see what he means. Not the seamless integrated product I'd expect from Rolex.

However I did begin to question the integrity of the review toward the end when he starts talking about how a Quartz watch would offer better value.

Well he's saying that given that the movement is a cost-efficient workhorse and not horologically interesting, you might as well have a quartz; whether you agree with that or not I have no doubt that it was his own view and he does justify it handsomely, with illustrations to boot, so I can't doubt the integrity really.

I remember reading that piece in the late '90s, nice to know it's still there. The images look a lot smaller these days.

Anyone inclined, on reading that thread, to take Richard Paige's word that Walt Odets never "cracked open" a watch cheaper than a Patek, Vacheron et al might be interested to read these pieces:
