some of modern divers are more like fashion/casual watches
and I m sure never seen more water than a drops
    Steinhart Apollon

    Helson Laguna

    Pleamar

and if considered as casual why avoid leather then? it fit better than rubber

Divers come in all kinds of aesthetics, from vintage elegance to brutal machismo, and everywhere in between. They only share a reasonably generous WR and a bezel, but otherwise come in every shape and form.

This range of aesthetics can suit all types of straps, because, surprisingly, things look good based on how they look. They do not look any better or worse because of the specification they were designed for.

Vintage Rolex (or Tudor) is one example, another might be all of the EPSA cased supercompressors, most of which look great on leather. I know my Pleamar (and my jumbo Chronostop) looked good on leather.

Do what you like, hard and fast rules are completely irrelevant.

    Works for me
Takes second to pop off the bracelet.... and probably 3-4hrs to decide on which strap matches my dive suit.

That's how I feel as well, though there I do like how leather straps look - and there are some leather straps which are water resistant, which enables you to have your cake and eat it!

I don't see anything wrong with robustly waterproof leather on a watch designed for wet use - saying "no leather on a dive watch" whilst it being perfectly OK to wear a dive watch with a rotating bezel on its bracelet, and never get it wet let alone time a dive with it, seems daft to me. Personally I think dive watches look better on steel which is why I wouldn't put leather on one.

I've tried rubber straps and they are all uncomfortable, hair-grabbing and difficult to put on and take off. So I would happily take a submersion-resistant leather or leather-rubber combo such as the Hirsch straps, which don't stretch or smell if you look after them right.
...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!

To keep the leather soft and supple
    Obviously

  7. #57
Also when you get out of the water the leather absorbs water off your wrist while steel and rubber leave a squishy wooshie shishi

    Why?

    1. Function: I find that only leather can provide sufficient restraint of a heavy diver to enable day-long comfort whilst active out of water.
    2. Taste: Clearly subjective of course but: the right strap can compliment the watch head in terms of scale and presence etc -
    3. Leather worn on a desk diver acknowledges that it is off duty.

In comparison, a Nato arguably achieves non of the above - may as well attach it to your wrist with snot.

The old surfers used to say "function before fashion."

OTOH, Frank Sinatra popularized "I Did it My Way"

True a bit hasty as I've tried my divers on leather and for me I always go back to mostly Nato's for comfort, I must admit I do like the Steinhart ocean one vintage on leather.
At the end of the day wear what you like.

I think the worse sin with a vintage diver is to put it on modern rubber.

  18. #68
Because I will change the strap if I am taking it underwater!

  19. #69
I think this works just fine. It's a 1000m diver, you can buy it like this (OK, with white stitch not red) - it's waterproof leather and IMHO looks great, I don't see the problem?uploadfromtaptalk1429397786684.jpg

Because it looks good, for practical reasons it isn't so good,I don't wear my dive watches for purpose, default watch for going into water is my 82 or G-Shock.

  21. #71
I have always been of the opinion divers on leather are a no no. But after seeing some of these and my new sinn u1, I ordering a toshi, I think it looks really smart

Lots of People do waterproof leather - Hirsch (e.g. Mariner), Di Modell (Chronissimo) etc etc. Bizarrely a lot of them give their leather 100m rating, which does my head in, but it is waterproof.

I have worn one of my Chronissimos over at least 4 weeks of 3-4 soakings a day, and it is fine.

Isn't the Hirsch Robbie also a waterproof (100m) leather/rubber strap? They've been featured on a few member's watches and can look very good.

  32. #82
I have a Hirsch Robbie and it is waterproof but I can't imagine any of it ever came from a cow! I think there are a few in the same rubber-backed range that have done cow on them though. Personally I think its a lovely strap but a little thin for a chunky watch.

And so whilst were discussing leather straps on divers, let's see what your " Tudor Black Bay Reds" are wearing.

Mine is on the brown leather it came with, but really hanker after something a little thicker but still tapered slightly.

Strap rated to 7000ft. Watch only rated to 4000ft.

Personally, I find leather on a diver an absolute 'verbot'...!

Nothing to discuss... I don't, won't, couldn't, can't abide and will never do it... ;-)

Beauty, it is often said, is in the eye of the beholder. Some people are more conservative than others which obviously relects in their taste but I generally prefer oyster style bracelets on dive-style watches, leather straps on vintage and dress watches and rubber bands on the bulky, sports style chronos. I simply can't stand anything too garish but that's just me. If you think that your watch looks good on a certain type of strap then fit it and wear it. Simple as.

Not to mention the fact that some poor sod is walking around wearing a bomber jacket with two bloody strips cut out of it!!

    ;)

    Nice strap, like that.

Someone once told me a watch is a piece of jewellery that happens to also tell the time. As such I like certain styles, mostly divers, and like to change the strap to individualise it, and putting it on leather as opposed to the bracelet it came with works a treat for me. I currently have a red suede on my sub and love it. I wouldn't go in the shower with it, even on its bracelet let alone swim or dive

Do Steinhart even market the Apollon as a diver? As it has a fixed bezel it doesn't seem to fit the most basic requirement (in spite of its 300m WR rating).
