Failed attempt to hack my TZ UK Account

Im not sure if it's been mentioned before but I've recieved the following warning that someone has unsuccessfully tried to access my account -

Someone has tried to log into your account on TZ-UK Forums with an incorrect password at least 5 times. This person has been prevented from attempting to login to your account for the next 15 minutes.

The person trying to log into your account had the following IP address: 182.253.122.12

    All the best,
    TZ-UK Forums

Iit might be worth changing your password as a precautionary measure if it happens to other forum members.

It might be worth doing a search before you post stuff like this. It's been mentioned LOTS of times.

When you do, just make sure you stick a thread up about it.

Would you like me to try? I've got some spare time this morning. Then don't forget to let us know how I went.

Agree with this, which hasn't been answered yet - what would be the benefit of hacking someones account.

Been answered in at least one of the other dozen or more threads about this.

The usual reason is to post spam on the forum. This has happened with at least one account that got hacked.

The other, more insidious possible reason is what is known as "spearphishing". That is similar to phishing (sending spoof emails to try to steal your bank details, paypal account, etc.) except that it's targeted at a specific person that is believed to be a high-value target, and is much more subtle in execution; sometimes impossible to detect. It was originally developed as a technique for (primarily government-backed) cyber-espionage teams to infiltrate the computers of politicians, civil servants, etc., to intercept their private communications. It's now becoming an increasingly common way to make plain-old crime more efficient. Since a forum like this tends to attract people with above average net worth, it might be a good place to find targets if a tech-savvy criminal wanted to spend a few hours trying to hack one specific computer or steal that one person's identity, rather than invest that time into spamming thousands of people at random and then scamming the stupidest 0.1% that actually fall for it. There's potentially a lot of useful information in the non-public parts of a forum like this: real names, addresses, bank details (which might be in PM inboxes) and so on, all of which can be used to forge realistic-looking requests from banks, set up fake accounts in the targets name, and so on.

    TL;DR: bad things.

Summary: Secure your account. Make sure you have a decent password.

Since you are asking: Not me. But I am sure others will be around to give you real first hand experiences of hacking attempts. I mean real bad people trying to hack forum accounts to commit really bad things like, ehh, what?

Well for example. If you have bought or sold anything via SC then it's possible there could be emails detailing your or other people's bank details. I'm sure most people would prefer that these didn't fall into the hands of hackers.

Also some people use the same password for multiple accounts etc. Given that your email address is stored under your personal details, a hacker could try accessing other sites eg Amazon, eBay etc.

Not sure what the potential risk is but personally I would prefer not to find out.

    Hi,

I also received the email warning of five fraudulous attempts to log into my account...which has reminded me I got an account in here. :-o

Yes, and some people write their bank card PIN on the back of it. No cure against stupidness...

I keep a PIN number note in my wallet.

Of course, it's not actually my PIN number...
