I think the prices of watches now dosnt help matters a few years ago a nice watch was a few hundred pounds now it can be 1000s a lot more to lose if something goes wrong

eBay buyer protection only applies if the buyer pays by PayPal. If they pay cash then there is no buyer protection from eBay at all. Thus cash on collection always provides safety for the seller. Of course, there's no eBay seller protection either in this scenario but that doesn't matter if the seller has just got cash in hand.

I'd email the buyer a link to this thread ... if he is contemplating something then reading this thread may put him off ...

if a buyer pays with paypal then collects it and you don't have proof you gave it to him such as a receipt or a photo handing it over then indeed they can go home report to ebay they never received the item and they will refund him from your account. I have heard about this. But as others have commented, if he gives you cash on collection all is fine

His request seems totally silly just like

your request when you started the whole "they didn't return my keeper" topic......This is dirt and nothing else...A tootbrush, some dishwasher soap and warm water would do the trick.....
Same gunk can be seen on the bezel as well.....totally rediculous..

Personally I wouldn't be surprised if he had already read it. ;-)

With eBay's/PayPal's buyer protection terms as they are, I don't think even a signed receipt or photographic proof would help! As far as I can tell, the only thing eBay/PayPal would care about is a proof of delivery that they can look up online (e.g. RMSF, RMSD, suitable courier, etc.).

Thus it seems to me that the only way to do a F2F sale safely with eBay is cash only.

Whoops, sorry guys missed the bit about COD but as others have said if the buyer pays via Paypal and then collects the item then this can leave you open. I'm sure I read a story on av forums where somebody sold an expensive item, buyer came round, got a demo and a cup of tea and collected. The buyer then did a item not delivered and even though the buyer had a sale and collection note and cctv footage Paypal still refunded the buyer.

As per my message above, that would concur with my understanding of the terms of eBay/PayPal's buyer protection. Unless the seller has a delivery receipt that eBay/PayPal can look up online, they will side with the buyer.

If you end up on the receiving end of paypal trying to take money out of your account to refund some scammer then I suppose you could cancel your card details with paypal and tell your bank not to release funds under any circumstances, or maybe empty then close the account. Seems extreme but possession is nine tenths...

Been there. Then they turn it over to a debt collector

  11. #111
Wow - well discovered, as it wouldn't have surprised me if his next communication was "I have taken it into Tudor and the problem is worse than I thought - they say it isn't genuine..." Hopefully this thread + the provenance you have of the watch going to Tudor will mean any potential scams have ended here.

The guy could have been limbering up to say the item was not as described and that he would send it back to you. You would have received the fake. Hopefully he has read this thread and decided not to chance it now.

Hi guys, just to echo what others have said, PayPal advised that so long as I have the receipt to prove delivery I am fully protected. They have updated their files to reflect my most recent discussion with them. I have URLs, pictures, forum posts, addresses and everything else I could think.

PayPal are lying shitbags. Once they have their cash they don't give a rats arse.

  18. #118
Send him a message tonight asking him to return the watch & you'll issue him a full refund.
I've dealt with loads of these types of clowns on the bay & he's just after a nice chunk of money back.
90% of these type of buyers will stop bothering you if you ask them to just return the item.

And yes it does look like he's wiped the watch with a dusting cloth.

If you follow that tactic and he returns the fake what do you do then?

He has the money & the watch ...

Guys, I won't be doing anything else at this stage. I've done all I intend to now. If the buyer has any sense he will enjoy the lovely watch he now owns and get on with life.

You. He's online now claiming that he took the watch you sent him into an authorised dealer to have the bezel looked at and they held it claiming it's a fake...

Result. I'd never use EBay to sell anything of high value.

What is to be learnt apart from don't sell luxury watches on ebay?

You can sell on ebay but only do cash on collection and meet at your bank so the money is paid straight in, so no fake notes and none of his friends waiting for you when you leave.

The seller sold his watch and has his dosh, so all is well?

Nothing wrong with eBay. Yes, there are idiots/scammers, but for every complaint there's like a hundred hassle free sales. I guess it's a case of the satisfied people not making threads about it and only reading about the bad. Just know what you're doing when selling expensive things, but that's the same offline.

Glad to see it all went well - have been following this. Yes eBay has its problems, but I think that, like in real life, mostly people are honest.

  44. #144
Personally I've sold a fair bit on eBay over the years but never bought a sausage since having my fingers burnt a few years ago. Luckily I didn't lose much money at all but it left a nasty taste and I avoid it like the plague now! I'd certainly never sell anything worth over £100 tops and I don't buy anything at all.

A lot of people say how safe ebay is to buy from beacause of their paypal garentees I'm sure they would refund a couple of hundred quid, not sure I'd want to test it if it was a few thousand not with my money anyway

PayPal doesn't refund you. They oversee a situation that can't be resolved with a seller. And ultimately pull the refund from their account if that's what's gonna happen, whether it's there or not and whether it's tens or thousands.

I think it's very sensible to retain all your evidence.

I really do hope that is the end of things, but remember that buyers do have 180 days in which to raise a dispute with PayPal, and that neither eBay nor PayPal take feedback (positive or negative) into account when ruling on disputes.

This is very good advice; I hadn't thought of meeting at a bank but it's a great idea - thanks, and could apply to all high value transactions. Paypal fees do make face to face transactions better for the seller IMO
