Fell runners knot, all you'll ever need.
Apropos of nothing, an very interesting site I came across a few months ago.
http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/knots.htm
Discovered that for the last forty odd years I've been tying my laces incorrectly, changed direction on the first knot and, hey presto, my laces never come undone now.
I also now use the secure knot on my littlun's shoes and they stay tied now, without those hideous double knots that can take ten minutes to unpick.
Fell runners knot, all you'll ever need.
"Ian's Shoelace Site - Bringing you the fun, fashion & science of shoelaces"
Now i've seen it all!
Yes, that's a good site - I came across it a couple of years back when I was searching how to tie a "boat shoe knot". My moccasins have been very trendy since then! ;-)
That site has actually been on my Bookmarks list for years... people mock you when you show it to them, but then you see them a few days later with their boots laced in the approved army fashion and you know what they have been reading ;)
PS (as mentioned above) I have always laced my shoes "military fashion", but I have just re-tied my laces as per that website, and they are much better!! The know is much less chunky and doesnt slip now, plus can be un-done much more easily - why havent I been doing it this way all my life!!!
There will, no doubt, be a few members introducing their mothers to this site.
What are laces?
I only wear Chelsea boot and slip-ons........
I came across this site about a year ago, informative and you will find lots of ways to lace your boots. Cheers
All my life people have mocked the way that I do up my laces as taught to me by my mother about 56 years ago.
I've lived with a complex ever since but now thanks to this link I realise I'm not alone.
It even has a name, the Bunny Ears!
scooter
I echo Mick's comments above - a couple of weeks on I have been tying my shoe laces and draw-string-trousers the "new way", and find it much, much, much better! No more loose knots, chunky knots and knots that get twisted and stuck!
THIS is what they should teach at school!!
No way how simple, yet effective.
Any one know a good way of tying boot laces to stop the (boot) tongue slipping to the side of your foot? It's making my new Cheaney Nickleby boots crease in the wrong way. There is no tongue hole holder thingy!
Every day is a school day!

That's a site I found some time ago, after a spell of nautical knot tying made me realise that my mum had taught me to tie a granny bow. It's surprising how many smartly attired men have the bow on their nice leather shoes sitting 'up and down' showing they have the same problem. A properly tied bow will sit across the shoe.
After reading this thread this morning and sniggereing, my shoes came undone twice on my lunch time stroll.
I'm not re reading and re tying my shoes!
Great link, cheers. Will give a few of those a go later.
Haha would you believe it! I've read the instructions and I've been tying my shoes wrong for 38 years. My bows are now perfectly perpendicular to my shoes!

Great site! Thanks, Everyone now officially thinks I'm nuts, getting excited over shoe laces. :)
Another who saw this site some time ago. I use his secure know all the time now. And found the lattice lacing method useful for a pair of shoes that never felt right.
Geeky, but I couldn't care less! :)
I have some walking shoes that for some reason the laces ALWAYS came undone, no matter how tight I pulled................not any more :) !!!!!!
I am flying back home from Berlin today, anyone know of an approved tactical flight shoelace knot ?
Science enters the picture, see: why shoelaces come untied.
There is a further article (that's been reported by the BBC) in the Proceedings of the Royal Society A, "The roles of impact and inertia in the failure of a shoelace knot", but you need to be a subscriber in order to access the full article. However, the abstract and some supplementary data can be viewed.
