Yesterday in Yeovil, Somerset a van explosion was triggered by the owner using an aerosol spray to clean the dashboard, he then turned the engine on, causing a reaction and explosion due to the cleaning product vapours.

The crew made the vehicle safe and confirmed that the cause was accidental. The van was severely damaged following the explosion that had resulted in the windscreen being blown off along with the doors buckling outward and further damage.

The man was momentarily engulfed in flames resulting in mild burns to his face and neck. The Yeovil Fire Crew initially treated the casualty on scene until the arrival of the paramedics who then conveyed him to hospital. He was treated and went home that afternoon.

Pretty happy with my answer, although Dave+63 was much closer. I thought that one can wouldn't have a fast enough punch to bend the doors and the roof before the windows give in – or enough force to do it more slowly.

    Wow!

You sure he wasn't trying to blow himself up?
If you lived in Yeovil, you'd understand why.........

I am amazed by this real world illustration of a electromotor spark igniting aerosol fumes.

Poor guy; taking proper care of his van and then it literally backfires to explode the crap out of the vehicle.

The Fire Investigation Officer who attended the incident confirmed the cause, so why shouldn’t we believe him?

My point, if I have one, is that the cleaning of a cockpit using an aerosol cleaner is not uncommon, switching on the ignition is also not uncommon probably whilst cleaning your car. Given those 2 points I can't remember another car blowing up in such a manner (or hearing of it) so I suspect something else may be at play here.

A fireman friend tells me that a popular MO for torching cars is: lit cigarette in ashtray, can of furniture polish (with the nozzle jammed down) thrown into car, close door and await the result.

Just does not look right to me ??? The passenger door has a big dent going inwards at the bottom half ??? And why would the top of the screen/ front roof rail suffer so much damage it's quite strong there, To me it looks more like someone has attempted to lift and remove it VERY badly, Can't help wondering if he was caught sleeping! in wrong house.

When the fuel-air mix is just right a big bang can result. Getting it that right is rare by chance but, when it is right, then I guess this is what results.

There really does seem to be no reason to doubt the 'official' explanation.

    .

The chances of the "mix" being bang-on (no pun intended) are thousands to one, but it happens, sometimes with tragic results....

Fireman opening it to disconnect the battery I’d imagine.
