Thread: A Lange At Last!

  1. #1

    A Lange At Last!

I usually buy a watch without much thought – often on a whim – but have prevaricated over this one for over a year now. Part of the reason was the cost – it’s the most expensive watch I’ve bought – and part of it was indecision. I couldn’t decide between the current model in rose gold and the previous model in white gold, which actually looks very different. Some people may have read and contributed to the thread I started on the subject in December last year, and perhaps formed the impression that I was dreaming and wouldn’t buy anything!

Anyway, it’s taken until now to reach a decision and do something about it, partly prompted by the strengthening pound that made the purchase from Germany a bit less painful and partly because I finally made my mind up. Have to say that the decision I came to had more to do with my personal position rather than the relative desirability of either watch. They’re both great in my view and the white gold/older model would be more wearable in more situations. But I already have a dozen other watches which I can wear “anywhere” and so elected to get something less versatile, but perhaps the more special because of that. I also reasoned that although the white gold/older model is more wearable, I probably wouldn’t wear it more because of the value.

Anyway, here are the pictures with equal coverage of front and back, which seems about right. Oh, it's a Lange & Sohne 1815 chronograph. I bought it used but unworn.

Splendid - what do these go for new and also what are we talking about, ball park, for second hand models?

    A lovely choice indeed.

Lovely - Well done and enjoy it.

I'd really like a Lange (or a Moser) at some point.

Wow! I have only four watches on my 'must own one day' list and this is at the very top of it.

Congratulations on your very good taste.

Massive congrats Sir, undeniably one of the most desired watches you can buy. If it wasn't for the Patek 5170G it could well have been top of my fantasy/lottery win list!

That is without doubt a beautiful watch. Many congratulations.

Wear it upside down. Those Lange chromo movements are just exquisite.

Absolutely gorgeous, congrats! Good to see you overcame an indecisive moment, I very much doubt you will regret it.

Superb. Beautiful balanced face and hands and I can only echo previous comments to the effect that the movement is a work of art.

Beautiful view through the case back. I'm also liking the use of the word prevaricated. I'm going to try and use it more often

Well done. That's a lovely watch. The dial is well balanced, with an exceptionally nice fonts. The movement is beautiful and the case well made, but not overbearing. What more could one want?

    Best wishes,
    Bob

Thank you. Yes I couldn't quite make my mind up whether to use it!

That was what I thought...nothing. In fact I was considering titling this thread 'End of the game?' Tastes vary of course, but I'm not sure what would be 'better'.

    My grabber is flasted.

Utterly wonderful - my problem is that I could never own a watch like that as I would become a social pariah stopping people on the street and demanding that they appreciate the beauty of the movement through the display case.

I would be robbed and shot within a week.

  31. #31
Congratulations. That certainly is one beautiful watch. Well done.

What a watch, just beautiful.Very clean simple dial and that movement, very complex and superbly finished. If I won the lottery several Lange's would be my first purchases.FP Journe are one of the few brands that come close.

God, that's a thing of beauty. In fact, ALS is the manufacture I aspire to, although whether I actually ever own one remains to be seen.

Fantastic choice, and the nicest watch I've seen on here for some time.

Better, perhaps not, but as good... there are a few. But that is a beautiful watch.

All you have done here is recalibrate your tastes and expectations. When I bought my Breguet Classique and sat it amongst my steel sports watches, I thought there could never be anything like it. Ah, if only... You'll start looking at very different things now. Patek, VC, Moser, FP Journe, even high end Glashutte Original. At least thst;s what happened to me!

The door was opened to a wonderful new, recalibrated world :)

Many thanks for all the kind comments. Took a few more gratuitous...and maybe slightly better...photo's just now. Someone else set me on the road to ruin with photo's of one of these over a year ago, so now it's my turn.

In my opinion there is nothing nicer than a manual wind Lange movement!
