Do you worrie about your watch when out.

It occurred to me yesterday when somone mentioned about being frightened to wear such a expensive watch due to the chance of being robbed.

Now I have my first relatively expensive watch and am new to watches it got me thinking about when and how I wear it.

I got my watch mainly for evening/meals/socialising etc and not everyday wear however ive been very conscious about it the few times I've had it on so far (prob because it's new) and been in pubs/town/taxis etc i for example found myself Keepng it out of sight in some instances like at the bar and groups of lads have been around or keeping my jumper pulled over it while in a taxi.
Don't get me wrong I'm not walking around showing it off or anything I just would hate to attract the wrong attention.

I don't frequent dodgy places or anything but it just got me thinking I wonder how others act or does it not cross their minds When out generaly in pubs etc? Mines a cheap compared to people on here with 10/20/30k watches aswell so just wondered how others act.

I suppose you could always claim that if the wrong attention was to happen 👍

99.9% of people couldn't tell the difference between your nice watch and a £40 Citizen solar chrono.

    Seriously, I wouldn't worry.

    Depends where I'm going.
Round the shops for a pint of milk, no worries.
Wandering around the Bronx, Mexico City, Lagos or say, Chatham I'd tend to lean towards wearing something with Casio on the dial.

It's insured so if, God forbid someone tries to take it at knife point etc I will hand it over pretty sharpish... Life's too short!

All the rougharses round here have better, more expensive watches than me anyway.

  13. #13
There was a thread along same lines . Best look it up.

  14. #14
I don't "worry" about my watch or my trainers.

The chances of being mugged are so slim Its a bit like asking " do you drive your car after midnight in case of being hijacked"

I would assume a guy wearing a watch in the 20/30k upwards price tag, would generally be in better surroundings than the average working class guy ie down the Dog N Gun singing karioke with his bird Chelsea.

I would also guess the typical thieving scroat would stand out, well like a typical theiving scroat and so not be in the same circles the typical 20/30k watch wearer would be frequenting.

Never bothers me,but that doesn't mean I'm not aware of what I might have on when out n about.

In all seriousness, no more or less with or without an expensive watch. I've been robbed a couple of times, I've fought off attackers a few times, I've been saved from being robbed at knife point once, and have refused to be robbed two times, one of which was at gun point. I am from Bosnia. So I've learned to be smart and judge a place and time. If I go back to a high crime area, I don't walk around like a pimp with my bling on display. At other times I try to be smart, but don't stress about it. Besides, I'm much more concerned with my own and my wife's safety than I am about a watch.

Simple really, if you're not comfortable wearing your pride and joy when you go out, then don't.
I don't worry, only for the other persons knee caps should they try and take from me of what I've worked hard for, end of.

I don't feel people notice my watches but if I felt it might be dangerous I would leave at home or pull my sleeves down.

Listen to Ten-men here! Is there a lot of kneecapping going on in the slums of Gloucestershire then?

  25. #25
I had a sobering experience when I moved from a media career to a job which brought me into contact with a lot of people who were in real financial difficulty. I never felt comfortable wearing my Sub LV to the point I just stopped wearing it, it just seemed inappropriate. So I sold it, bought a U1 as a daily wearer - and am happy to wear it 24/7. I never worried about getting mugged when I wore my fancy watches back in the day, but looking back maybe I should have been - what seems like an average watch on this forum would be an awful lot of money to some less fortunate individuals out there!

All very macho, but 2 or 3 people coming at you in a pub or club, or down an Alley Way with a knife* - it doesn't matter how hard you worked to earn it, that's the time to hand it over and console yourself that your watch is insured. *unless you're Bruce Lee or similar, or have a close protection team!

    Exactly. Enjoy wearing it!

I'm not in the least bit worried about what I'm wearing. If I'm not at work I'm usually with the family, and they're are much more valuable.

I don't worry but I do try to wear a watch appropriate for the circumstances.
I wouldnt wear an 18ct GMT2 in my local where a lot of farm workers are on minimum wage for instance, it would be rude and insulting IMHO

Having said that I did wear a platinum day date 365 days a year for over 3 years but very few people knew what that was.

  34. #34
In my company we were advised in certain areas and situations to adapt our dress code from shirt and tie to t-shirt and jeans etc due to repeated threats/assaults/robberies

I am sure in these estates/areas where you cannot wear a shirt and tie without getting your head kicked in/mugged it may not be the best idea to wear a watch of any value (no matter how hard you may think you are)

Thank god i don't have to work in any of these places,

    Generally no, I don't worry.

it is insured, but I can't imagine being mugged is a pleasent experience....

a couple of times, I've felt a little concerned when in a unfamiliar place, and I've simply put the watch in my pocket.

Thanx for the comments guys, I thought there might be a couple of sarcastic ones.
I'm not trying to be macho, or even think I'm "ten-men" I'm simply saying that I'd never simply hand over anything I'd worked hard for, after all, it's probably going to be scum of the earth that's trying to take it from you.
I only go into the darkest parts of gloucester for work reasons, and beleive me they are dark, and for that reason I'll be wearing my trusted g shock, so probably not going to get much attention.
More attention is probably paid to my work van with God knows how many thousands of pounds worth of tools in there.
And as for the knife comment, I've actually got a scar on my cheek from a blade of some sort, it's from many years ago when I lived just outside London, so yes, I do know what it's like to be confronted by a lethal weapon.
I'll stick by what I've said, I'll not let anyone take anything from me unless lives depended upon it.

Nah. Never worried about it getting stolen. If it gets nicked it gets nicked, it's all part of the fun in having an expensive watch.

Cheeky, that's where I live now, compared to some of the inner cities, it's heaven!

The hardest bloke I ever knew (and he was very very hard indeed - a professional fighter with decades of training and experience) told me if someone mugged him at knife point, he would hand over his wallet and walk away.

To come away unscathed from a fight with an armed opponent, you'd not only have to be good, you'd have to be lucky, and sensible people will not deem this a worthwhile risk.

That said I took my chances once with an idiot who told me he had a knife. I was willing to bet he actually just had his hand in his pocket. I was either right or lucky.

The only time I was threatened with a knife was when I was working in a pub here in Paris, a long, long time ago. Some scrote refused to leave at chucking out time with a belligerent 'I'll leave when I'm ready'. Anyway got near the door and he pulled a knife from his windcheater pocket and started waving it in my face. Forewarned is forearmed as they say, and I was both; I had a can of pepper spray in my hand with my finger on the button. I let him have a short sharp dose in both eyes from about 6 inches. You could say the threat was neutralised.

    You don't get it.

He'd never simply hand over anything he'd worked hard for. He'd just take out their kneecaps. Easy, got a scar and everything.

    I'd wear a Graham.

The crook would look like a complete cock wearing it, and would have a snowballs chance in hell of shifting it on.

    Lol

i never worry about my watch. More worried about myself and the company I'm with. I can always buy another watch. 20 years ago Id have had a go at anyone who thought it might be a good idea to try mugging me - but thankfully much more calm and sensible these days.
It's just a matter of time...
