Sorry to say that I frequently find myself shaking my head when I hear some girl with a tramp stamp or three calling out to her 5 year old ''Chelsea'' whilst walking down the street of any nameless derelict Northern town.

TZ-UK is home to more than just "Little Englanders" and if our foreign contingent choose to use their normal idioms of speech I'm sure we can all understand it rather than just criticise for the sake of it.

I have my American daughter in law staying with me over Christmas and I certainly don't spend all day "correcting" her Americanisms.

It makes a nice change and is cute.

One of the best I've seen is "Chavorn" - spelt that way. My ironyometer exploded.

My other pet hate is narcissistic celebrity names. These range from the mildly vain - like Will and Jade Smith calling their kids Wilma and Jaden, to the completely ridiculous like Jermaine Jackson calling his kids variations on the "J" theme e.g. Jermajesty (FFS!) or Evander Holyfield calling his variations on the "E" theme. Not only do they give the poor kids stupid names, they also end up looking horribly, horribly self absorbed.

When picking my son up from nursery. I noticed on the list that one of the kids was called 'Octavia'. No idea if that was a boy or girl but whatever its origin, why why why would you call your offspring a name that loads of people associate with a midsize Czech hatchback!

Latin name (eighth child). For example, Octavia was sister to Augustus, and wife of Mark Antony.

Indeed. And quite popular in Victorian times, such as : Octavia Hill ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octavia_Hill ) along with your barn-load of other pre-birth control darlings : Quintus, Sextus, Septimus, Decimus etc.

We had resolved to call ours Octavia had she been born on the 8th of the month - but she arrived early. (For the first & last time)

Just enjoying a glass of wine and a read through this thread giving me a good old chuckle. We called our daughter Jennifer so how weird is that? I always tell her if she was as boy we were going to call her Schadenfreude Steelbath. Anyway fellow watch enthusiasts thanks for the fun.

Isn't there a list of approved names in France & German you have to pick from?
No. There is no Robert variation with two b's in Germany and there is no 'approved name register' either. Wonder where all this information comes from?

That's for England and Wales I believe. Quite a different list in Scotland. Jack has been top for years for boys and the first time in years the girl's top name isn't Sophie.

    2 James 414 no change 2 Sophie 514 -1
    3 Lewis 373 no change 3 Olivia 446 -1
4 Oliver 362 no change 4 Isla 401 no change
    5 Logan 328 1 5 Jessica 392 2
    6 Daniel 322 -1 6 Ava 349 no change
    7 Noah 305 6 7 Amelia 340 1
    8 Charlie 296 1 8 Lucy 338 -3
    9 Lucas 292 -1 9 Lily 282 2

I often wondered why there seemed too be so many variations in spelling of fairly commonplace names.... I think it's because their parents didn't know of how the names were supposed to be spelt in the first place....
