    Pocket Watch - yes/no

More and more now I'm wearing a waistcoat so my mind was wondering about a pocket (fob?) watch. So first off is this simply a 'don't go there' or can it be considered respectable thing to have? Second if it's a possible route then what to look at in the up to a grand price range?

Just thinking whilst eating lunch... ;-)

Pocket watches are the business! Thing is, you need to get all sartorial details in place.... that can be fun though.

Pocket watches are awesome. I just don't wear waist coats enough. But if you do. Go for it. I got an old IWC pocket watch for around 500 and got it serviced and it works great. Check the usual fleabay for some nice options.

That's it I don't know.... I'm thinking not gold, and silver is a pain keeping clean so SS I suppose. That probably limits choices to something on the newer side rather than vintage but I'm not adverse to considering anything at this stage. I guess you have to think of a chain then as well ;-)

I don't think silver is a pain to keep clean, it doesn't tarnish that quickly.

A vintage silver watch would look very distinguished IMO

I started looking at American railroad watches a little while ago. They have a very interesting history re their development and use. Some of the movements and dials are beautiful. There's a lot to learn before taking the plunge, although good examples can be found for not a lot of money.

On the vintage side, some of the IWC Pocket watches do look nice.

That looks quite nice and it's not too expensive as a toe in the water type of thing.

Nothing disrespectable about it at all, but personally a bit hipster for me. Up there with riding a penny farthing around Hackney and drinking cocktails out of a teapot. But if it fits your zeitgeist, then acquire away ;).
...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!

Not for me, but I've had a pathological hatred of waistcoats since I was at school!

I think you're learning that there's a great variety out their. There's even a UK site selling new pocket watches, so that will allow you to explore a little. This one isn't on there: link. Some on here will hate it for the maker, some don't like the styling...but I'm very happy with my wristwatch from them and wear it regularly.

A couple of hours browsing on google (or even Amazon)... the range is HUGE!!!

I'm thinking now of more of the modern slant rather than the vintage look.

Too many to choose from :-(

Looking around and there are some fabulous pieces out there.

I especially like this and was drawn to the strap :

If you're brave you can wear your PW on your wrist. I love the quality of the strap :

I read recently that the small pocket in your levis was originally for holding a pocket watch:)

I fear I would look like Clarkson if I attempted jeans at this stage in my life, but I guess someone must make real trousers with a similar pocket.

That's my Waltham which is 2" across and has loads of room in those 501's which are about 6 years old now. I just tried it in a pair of those trendy Edwins and , though the pocket is much smaller, it still fits and hides the winder. I should wear it more often:)

I'm thinking of going the safe route which, for me, is buying something new or nearly new. I love the look of some of the vintage stuff but I'm not that watch savvy and I don't have a tame watch repair man that can help me out. Going for something a bit newer is the safe option. I love the idea of a silver case rather than SS (or plated brass). For me a silver case just has a bit more je ne sais quoi. I know I said I was worried by tarnishing but I'm convinced that's not really a problem. I'd really love a half hunter, I just love that look.
    e.g.

If I want to go this route are there any brands that are okay? I mean decent movements and build quality. I see the name Woodford a lot but what are they like?

Alternatively, if you have a jacket with a proper lapel buttonhole, you can wear a pocket watch in your top pocket. No waistcoat required.

Smiths pocket watches are very reasonable to get hold of (NOS about £30-£50 on eBay) I love the look of your Mondaine pocket watch is it a Quartz?

Tissot have some very nice pocket watches at a fair price using Unitas movements.

Now the Orient someone posted is very nice indeed, may have to pick one up.

Yes, quartz movement and a great performer. This is my second as I foolishly sold the first - regretted it immediately!

As regards old Smiths or Ingersolls - if you are willing to go up to £50-£60 you can pick up a near pristine one via eBay that has been newly serviced

I suggest you have a wíiíiíde look around and wait for a cool one to pop up.
If you intend to wear it as a daily iy may interest you to know that Citizen offers a VÉRY reasonably priced high end quality watch with temperature compensated quartz module inside.

I have end use quite a fex

All open faced and gravitating to ´Frackuhr´ with in some way interesting engine.

The two I enjoy wearing most are the 2MF ´Kapitanskie´ single button chronograph and the solid silver Seiko Elnix.

The second plane is occupied by the for a small omega symbol sterile 18K Omega frackukr and the modernist Mondaine.

I would like to score is an accutron, tuning fork, engined one.

Spot on. There's no denying they can be beautiful things in their own right, but it might be hard to wear one without looking like you are on your way to an ironic fancy dress party (aka living in Dalston). And there's just something about wearing a pocket watch that says, 'Look at me and my pocket watch'. But people say the same thing about Rolex I suppose so whatever makes you happy!

Less than 30.000 were hand made for the ministery of defense exclusively.
Indeed in the restricted workshop at the second Moscow watch factory.

Mine has the two maintenance facilitating factory mods and dates from ´53.

Here fotos way better than I can make them:

It looks übercool in the watch holder on my retro bicycle btw.

See Frackuhr...but you're still going to need a translation, I'm afraid. But, apparently it's a "dress watch..., distinguished by their smaller size and a particularly flat design [that] differs from the usual pocket watches.

New or used? You don't have to say what it is but I have been looking around at a few new sterling silver pocket watches.
