Why do these awful wristshots make my new watch look too big??

Just got this two days ago, and am very chuffed! But why do they always look too big in these shots??

  2. #2
Because you're using a wide angle lens from fairly close up. Any compact camera or camera phone will be about 28mm equivalent lens and will make wrist shots look awful. In fact they make most shots look awful due to the distortion they produce.

I learn something new every day, thanks for that 👍.

My wrist is about 8 inches, but I look like an anorexic in this picture...😋

Try holding the camera farther away and zooming in instead of holding it close.

Try redoing the shot but from farther away. Don't worry about it being too small in the frame, you can crop later. Use a simple picture editor to get the framing you want. Images for message boards and such don't need to be very big so you can probably get away with 20% of the full frame area.

It is a very big watch.

If we take the classic 'standard' size of a watch, about 35mm, then the area of the dial of the Big Pilot is about 70% bigger.

But also what Marcus says. Use the same principle for taking portraits of people - zoom in as much as you can, and move the camera as far back as possible.

Edit: Why did I spell the wrong type of principle? Naughty beer. Very naughty.

Taking photos of a watch on your own wrist is like going to a restaurant and taking photos of the food. Both are a silly internet phenomenon. Just enjoy wearing the watch and eat the food before it goes cold.

    Whahaha, LOL 😜.

    How did you do that?

If your wrist is eight inches that watch is really massive. Is that 47mm?

They don't call it the Big Pilot for no reason.

The watch is big, but on both sides of the wrist I have 3-4mm to spare.

On the picture however (that's the whole point) it looks like I am a tiny Asian guy. The Big Pilot is 46,2mm.

I think the best wrist shots are usually taken in a mirror from a distance. Seems to give a better perspective.

Because it is a massive watch. Bit of perspective needed on a few fronts!
...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!

quick photoshop, to be fair its a bad one

and sry in answer to your question, the watch looks fine on your wrist, remember the old rule, if the lugs are same size/smaller than your wrist then its fine.

To someone who doesn't know how photoshop works, it looks great 👍.

The mentioned rule is what I use and this one fits right in it, so no worries 😉

You could always chop your arm off and put it on a table to take the picture.

Tried it last time, but it got a little messy 😜

As usual the first answer is the correct one. Use a macro lens or shoot from further away and crop the frame to avoid this sort of distortion.

Take a picture of the watch on your wrist while you're looking at yourself in a mirror (and don't stand very close to it). Crop it close and post it up here. I bet it'll look a lot better on you.

exactly ...38-42mm is nice size for the average person....I dont like the watch lugs hanging over the width of my wrist

you are doing well if a 46mm watch does NOT look big on your wrist :)

If you are happy with the way it looks in a mirror, then just enjoy it. It's a lovely watch.

I think camera set up can make some difference, which is why the attached photo is taken with an i phone. Same close up wide angle unflattering shot.
A lot is said about wrist circumference. But I think the shape of the wrist is more important.

This watch sits very comfortably on my wrist, which is only slightly (Just under 8.5in ) larger than the OP. The watch shown is 44.5mm.
More pertinent, I think, is the measurement across the top of the wrist. If your wrist is flatter and most of the circumference is made up of the width rather than depth, you can wear a bigger watch. An 8 inch, very rounded wrist will not necessarily support a watch of over 40mm, some wrists of 7 inches , but flatter, will. On the other hand anything under 38mm looks like I am wearing a girls watch.

I'll not get techy (mainly because it's beyond me) but as you've discovered wristies taken close up can often exaggerate the watch size. Ideally photos should be taken from futher away. To save chopping your arm off try using a mirror to get the shot.

Same here, my wrist is pretty flat, anything up to a lug to lug distance of 56mm (never had a watch taller than that) will fit just fine, with one or two mm on both sides to spare.

Anything under 40mm looks like girly girl on my wrist ;)

its common for wrist shots to be deceiving and even modest sized watches can look big however. The Big Pilot is a very large watch though by any standards and it wears really big as well due to the small bezel. If it's really bothersome maybe consider switching to the mark xvii or pilots chrono.

I love this (and the OP's IWC) - what is it?

By the way your hand looks like you're a prize fighter with all that colour!

I have done plenty of scraping but never won a prize for it

My watch is the IWC Portuguese perpetual Calendar .

Isn't this the BIG pilots watch ? So, this is expected I suppose, but does not look too big on your wrist, it looks great. Wear it in good health.
