    My first Panerai

    Hello everyone,

I recently started a thread as I was recently bitten with the desire for a Panerai, and this was sufficiently different from my current diver orientated collection and was looking at a PAM00240, the titanium and tobacco dial combination really appealing to me.

I got some good advice, but in particular from Shadowman, who helped me in numerous PM's and gave me a lot of pointers. I also read up a bit on the brand and my attention switched to finding either a 00061 or a 00118, as these had the desired titanium and tobacco combination I was looking for along with the hand wind mechanism that was more true to the spirit of Panerai from general consensus.

Had a look and there weren't that many available with most seeming to be in America, but eventually found both a 61 and a 118 based in the UK, the 61 was lovely but didn't have papers whereas the 118 did and so I corresponded with the dealer and concluded a deal, again thanks to Shadowman for steering me on what to make sure was with the watch

    Anyway to some pics,

As it arrived with the Panerai rubber strap,

Quick change to a Buffalo strap from Watch Obsession

    And a gratuitous wrist shot,

Anyway thanks for looking, and I am very pleased with my acquisition

    Cheers

    Kevin

As I have the strap the wrong way to most?

Actually find it easier to put on like that

Are you left handed? I'm not but wear my watches on my right arm and find it a real pain doing up straps.

No right handed, and wear on the left, but I find it easier to put the strap on like that, particularly when the strap is new and very stiff

    Cheers

Many thanks Gray, yes I am delighted with it, feels very light compared to my 45.5 2500 PO

That's just odd That said, the deployant on my Stowa MO is more comfortable when worn back to front.

I know haha but so am I!

I always find it awkward to put on a strap, and I put on one of my watches upside down to try it to see if it was easier and I found it was. This is the first watch since where I have changed the strap and decided to put it on the wrong way and I find I can put it on a lot easier, but again maybe just me haha

    Congrats on your purchase!
That's a lovely pam you have there. Baz also offered me advises when I was looking for mine as well.

    Anyway enjoy!

Doesn't IWC's Big Pilot buckle up the opposite way to the considered norm?

Nice watch OP, I hope you enjoy it, though one Panerai frequently leads to another one being found 'necessary'

Lovely watch. I wanted a 118 but couldn't find one when I was looking. Ended up with a 177. They are lovely. Still probably my favorite watch. Enjoy yours. But don't go too strap mad, it can be another horrible addiction.

Another 177 owner here. Very fond of it. And do enjoy yours.

And as mentioned - be wary of the 'strap mania' :)

I can't put my finger on it, but I am drawn to Panerai. I'm just not sure if it's worth the cost. How does the quality of the Pam compare to the PO? I have a 42mm 2500.

    Congratulations.
    That's a nice Panerai.

Is that some kind of lizard grain strap you have on the right? I wonder how it would look on the watch because I can't help but think of the Seiko field master when I see that.

Friend of mine loves Panerai watches personally they are a bit of a look nice but not sure I would own one.

Still, congrats on your new watch try out a few Toshi straps on it, they tend to go well with them.

Congrats and welcome to the club from a newish member.

The more wrist time mine gets the more the bland is hooking me and I need another.

    Enjoy

Congrats on the new acquisition. The 118's a great choice.
The buffalo looks good but I think the shark will be even better.
In any case, next step - more straps!

    That's a great watch.

I love some of the Panerai's, but sadly my skinny wrist doesn't!

Beautiful watch, this is the exact watch I wanted back in 2004 when I started buying Panerai. They stopped producing this in 2003 though and replaced it with the 177!

I had to get a 177 and make do without the beautiful tobacco dial.

    Hello there.

Very different watches to be fair. The PO feels more substantial, but this is more down to the heft of the stainless steel against the titanium I suspect, and also the solid case back against the display on the Panerai.

The 118 looks more hand built, the PO more machine made if that makes sense, with the dial of the Panerai in particular being a thing of beauty in my eyes. The buckle of the Panerai is a lot more substantial that my PO (my PO is on the omega rubber) but of the 2 OEM rubber straps the Omega felt a lot better

    Cheers

one brand I have always watched from afar? I really should get one, I love the flatter case (sorry not very up on panerai) I would like to see them release a sinn style rubber bracelet, think it would work really well on the big case. one day I will venture in and to the OP, nice watch mate and this is how I wear most of my non-custom straps. I find the short length at six makes the whole watch sit further round my wrist and is more balanced.

Lovely Pam, I'm still saving to purchase a base 000, although I keep looking at the 372 and thinking which one! Now the 390 has popped up and I can't decide!

Sly was onto Panerai before they become mainstream. They even made several custom models for him with Slytech on the dial.

Apparently some of the Slytec models sell for as much as $400k!

Just looked at the linked article, the 9th most expensive one (PAM00315) is utterly gorgeous, but really it's a different world.
