Help with this Rolex Submariner 5513

    Hi all

Just a quick question, a freind of mine owns this Rolex 5513, he bought it a couple of years ago with box and a rolex service receipt from 2006.
Knowing i like watches he asked me what i thought, and at first glance i was very dubious, the hands have obviously been changed in the service, and the dial just doesn't look right at all, the Rolex "crown" seems too big and the writing doesn't seem as sharp as i would expect. I'm in no way a expert on the 5513, hence why I'm asking you lovly bunch :D. But any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers
    Doug

    Doug,

Here is a photo of my metres first mid-60s 5513 if this helps ....

this was serviced by Roles St. James during my ownership, so am happy with authenticity (dial, hand and domed acrylic unchanged, bezel insert a service replacement)

Here is a picture of mine, nothing like the one you have. That dial must have been replaced after the rolex service, I am no expert but to me its a fake.

I am no expert but that dial looks fake, not unless it is ultra rare, and the hands have been replaced, that bezel is a little odd too, just cant put my finger on it.

edit: it seems like the wrong crystal in there making the bezel seem sanded down on the inner ring

Coronet and ROLEX look like nothing I've ever seen before.

I'm no expert either, but it doesn't look right. Coronet is too wide and touching marker above. Oyster Perpetual is hyphenated. Doesn't look like anything I've seen.

Could be the camera angle but no sign of Swiss T > on the dial

    Christ, what a mess :(

Have you checked for him that the service papers match the serial number?

That was my next question - would be interesting to post a photo of the service document too if the numbers do actually match!

Dial is 100% fake. That alone is sufficient to steer clear

service papers match up with the serial number fortunately, but like you say does mean that the dial has been swapped out since 2006!

What can be done? I would probaly try and find a replacement dial, but how much is a replacement 5513 dial (NOS or vintage) likly to cost?

Papers (or is it the credit card sized certificate?) can be faked. That certainly isn't a Rolex dial.

If this was sent for service, assuming they would actually service it, I guess it'd be fitted with a late 5513 dial with white gold markers.

If rather have that though than this abomination... I'd be getting it to a Rolex Specialist rather than Rolex themselves... Just in case.

Steer clear of what? It's his friends watch.

If the dial had indeed been replaced since the service (which I must say is imho doubtful - my gut feeling is that the papers may well not be genuine either) who knows what else has been 'swapped' - the crown looks odd too compared to the other photos (too large in diameter, too short in the length of the fluted side) so who knows what a watchmaker/Rolex might find when they remove the back.

I sincerely hope this isn't as bad as it looks initially for your friend's sake, but ......

I feel very sorry for your friend!
I wonder what the story behind it is, and how much (if any) of the watch is real.

Nasty business, I hope your friend didn't pay too much for that. You'd think even on the worst fake they wouldn't hyphenate the wording.

Like others said, the dial is (a bad) fake.
    Have you opened it?...
