What do we think of the bezel, one is SS the other 18ct white gold and approx a Grand dearer.

Has to be the plain. Personally I have never liked the fluted. I feel it make s the watch unnecessarily fussy.
I prefer the fluted bezel, although is is probably not worth the price difference!
I went for fluted, I tried on both, and the fluted just looked stunning
A very rough guide (at least for me anyways) is that a jubilee bracelet works with a fluted bezel and a smooth bezel with oyster bracelet so in this case I voted plain.
As always there are exceptions as I don't mind a GMT with a jubilee bracelet.
To look at, in the watch box or whatever, the fluted. To actually wear, the smooth- fluted is a bit much with the pcl's as well.
Fluted looks better in those pictures.
I have the fluted and think it is perfect.
Off the wrist it is the plain but on the wrist the fluted dial is just fantastic the way it picks up the light.
Fluted for me, when the light hits it it is a sight to behold. Whenever I see a smooth bezel DJII it always makes me think of a Milgauss. If I want a Milgauss I'll but a Milgauss.
Fluted to me is how a Rolex should look.
Fluted bezel for me. However if you go bi-metal it needs to be a jubilee bracelet.
Plain for me, it just looks so timeless....an absolute classic.
Fluted obviously makes it more dressy, whichever you decide enjoy it!

I looked at both for my DJ purchase and ended up going for the plain bezel one reason being the fluted is white gold and I didn't want gold on my watch (find it a bit feminine) the other being, well it made it look a bit feminine.
End of they day it's your watch and your choice so get which one you prefer.

Blimey didn't realise the difference! Was about a year ago when I got mine. I saw the DJ in steel for Ł4500 only a few weeks ago though has it gone up recently?
Fluted for me,Plain bezels tend to be that little bit more prominent to signs of wear. That price difference is a bit of a surprise but I guess it is what it is.
Hate fluted bezels on every model.
I think they sort of work better with jubilee bracelets but the polished bezel is so much more understated.
I used to prefer the plain one but now I seem to be more drawn towards the fluted. No idea why.0
... although I do not like fluted bezels in general, a Datejust without one does not look right to me - in particular, in my eyes the plain bezel of the DJ II is just too wide and does not look very elegant, rather - plain. A slimmer version might be better, similar to the JLC Master Control 37/39mm vs. 40mm models.

I used to be plain all the way, but more and more I'm finding the fluted ones more attractive.

Nice looking piece either way, fluted makes it pop for me.
Each to their own, as always, but I find the fluted bezel too fussy and I think it detracts from the dial. A silver-dial Datejust II is next on my shopping list and, needless to say, I'll be getting the plain bezel.

From experience; smooth makes the watch look/wear larger, noticed this when I swapped my DJ 16000 for a DJ 16220 with a machined bezel. I asked Stephen in Jopsons, is the 16220 smaller and he explained the optical illusion caused by the different bezel types.
I prefer plain, particularly with an oyster bracelet. However, of all the used Rolex's I've seen, those with plain bezels look a lot more tired than their fluted counterparts, so purely from a longevity point of view I'd go fluted cos they tend to wear the wear better so to speak.
Also, there's no way I'd go DJ2 over DJ 36mm (sorry, couldn't resist).
Fluted in a heartbeat. One of the defining characteristics of the watch otherwise it's a bit 'meh' looking.
Fluted bezel gets my vote, although it's susceptible to getting damaged if the wearer is clumsy. Plain bezel can always be refinished easily.

Personally I prefer the plain bezel, but the fluted one is part of rolex heritage, from a time when a the bezel was screwed down using the fluting as a key for the tool used to do this.
As such, I think rolex should always have a version of this watch with the old style bezel, just as I hate the cyclops but accept that it's a part of rolex's repertoire, and appreciate that they make watches without it.
The fluted to me, only really works on a Jubilee or President style bracelet, not the Oyster, so I voted plain.

As the title says -but I own a 611300 41mm sunburst blue and I think it looks great
However when I can afford it I will get a fluted because I like the jubilee bracelet
But both are wonderful and each to their own-its like I can never figure out why any one would want to put a watch on a nasty bit of old nylon webbing !(nato-ugh!) and the same goes for rubber as well -a watch should be on a bracelet or leather we all have different like and dislikes

I was just in Fraser Hart today and have to say the fluted bezels are the way to go, esp on a DJ as it's its signature. Smooth bezels don't work for me, it also didn't look that good on the Exp1 or even on the blue Aqua Terra even tho I really like both those dials.

Does the fluted come with a sunburst dial ? Talking dj ii here as I'm pretty sure the 36 does....

The fluted bezel is a signature part of the Datejust, I would normally go for a plain bezel but when you are talking Datejust it has got to be fluted.
My missus bought a plain one recently but is now wondering about a fluted bezel. Anyone know if it's possible to have it swapped over if she decides she prefers fluted? Or is it a whole new watch?
