That really is very very nice - after all the thread-inches about the new SDc, this really hits home as to how great the old, simple, somewhat understated (at least by today's standards) some vintage sports watches are ...... reminds me I must give my 5513 some wrist time! Enjoy your stunning acquisition .....

    Red face That's a beautiful 1665!

John, wear that Great White in good health. It's lovely and fantastic patina. :)

Why are these given the nickname Great White?

  26. #26

    Red face

I think just to distinguish them from the venerable (and much rarer) 'Double Red' Seadweller that came before and to make owners of the later (non-red version) feel a bit better about their watch. :)

I noticed that the bracelet looks too small for the lugs. It's sunken well below the line of the lugs, whereas the new SDc has a bracelet that goes over the line of the lugs, which some people have heavily criticised.

Is it supposed to be like that or is what some would regard as 'Rolex laziness' today (with the SDc) considered acceptable in their older watches?

Lovely looking watch apart from that curiosity.

It’s supposed to be like that; that’s how it was before solid end links came along. If the end links got “squeezed” a bit as the years went by, they could appear set-in even more, but the ones on that watch look fine. I much prefer that design as it does’t compromise or get in the way of the appearance of the shape of the lugs. It’s not “laziness”.

Contrast this with the SELs on the new Sea Dweller, which simply don’t fit right ;)

Neither bothers me particularly although ideally both should have the bracelet flush with the lugs. What surprised me was that people moaned loudly over the SDc bracelet not meeting the lugs properly - claiming Rolex are lazy - , but this vintage SD gets crows of praise yet no one mentions the even less matching bracelet/lug issue!

Just made me raise an eyebrow!

Many vintage end pieces over the years are similar, they just need a small tweek to return them to their fomer glory and it's a more cost effective option than purchasing new end links especially since they increased from around £25 to £100 in one price amendment.
