    Greece Holiday Recommendations

My wife would like to go to Greece for a week on the 17th of May. She has been to Crete and Rhodes and does particularly like Lindos...... but Greece has so many options that before I book anything I thought it worth asking here if anyone has any particularly good or bad experiences.

We have to go on a Friday/Saturday/Sunday and flights seem limited from the North West surprisingly... thought Greece would be a popular flight destination.

I went to a place called Amoudi in Zante / Zakynthos for my honeymoon in 1996.

Many visitors thought it was too remote, I thought it was great. However, they were intending to build there, and I guess it may now have been commercialised.

The sea there also takes forever to get deep, a lovely slow walk into it.

Alykes and Alykanas are nearby also.

It was idyllic at the time (Amoudi).

We've only been to Greece twice, first time to Halikidi, the second time to Sivota.
Both holidays were very good, but of the two it would be Sivota every time.
Flights to Preveza weren't too regular from Manchester but you still had the Corfu option , as in you could fly there and transfer by boat.
There are some stunning locations in this part of Greece.

Athens has amazing array of watch shops.
Some tourist spots and the beaches are there as well.

Only draw backs are the daily strikes or worker protests.

Having been to Athens myself, it is not a place I will rush back to if honest. Nothing to Preveza flight wise other than a Thomson flight at £600 per head !

Don't mind paying but that rate seems excessive for none High Season.

But thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming...... keen to keep looking up the options.

    Stunning scenery

We have been to Skiathos,Skopelos,Zakynthos,Corfu,Halkidiki,Thasso s,Kefalonia,Rhodes and a few more,a number of times.
Much prefer the smaller islands, basic and simple lifestyle and in our experience very friendly people.
The scenery is stunning, haven't been back for a few years so couldn't say what its like now.We have flown from either Newcastle or Manchester but some islands only fly from certain airports and only a couple of times a week.
Hope to go back in the future.

If you can, get a flight to Cephalonia (Kefalonia), hire an apartment in Sami/Assos/Fiskardo, you will not be disapointed IMHO. Hire a 125cc twist & go about 15 Euros a day and just ride around the island. Fantastic Island and a place I could happily spend the rest of my life, it's a very beautiful place & very tranquil.

Such a stunning island... Miss the tourist spots and you can find some beautiful places... Been a couple of times staying at a friends villa in a sleepy little village overlooking the Ionian Sea, and same as you the first time was on my honeymoon!!!

Have to agree with this, the places you mention in the north of the island are as beautiful as you will find anywhere, absolutely stunning.

We've been to Parga in the North West. With the plane to Prevesa. We rented a car from there (plenty cars to choose from) and took it 50-ish kms north. Parga has some steep hills. Choose the location of your appartment carefully ;-)
A lot of Greek families choose Parga for their holidays. And you'll find a bunch of Italians.

An alternative: you can always rent a yacht. Bareboating when you're experienced or in a flotilla when you're a novice. Two weeks island hopping; every evening in another port, during the day sailing from island to island, swimming, snorkeling, fishing. Great! West coast sailing (Ionian Sea)is very easy: the islands are not too far apart and the weather is fine during the summer. On the east coast however, (Aegean Sea) things can be different! Near the Cyclades Island, the wind can be very 'interesting'... to say the least. Google 'Ionian Sea flottila sailing'.

Having travelled extensively in Greece, my favourites have been Ikaria - very small isolated island very quiet. Kassiopi on Corfu is great with easy boat trips to Albania (fascinating day trip), Corfu town and Agni which is really just 3 tavernas one of the most stunning bays I have been to in Greece. Don't rule out the mainland - Sparta and the Mani area is interesting if you have a car and want to see a different Greece ditto Thessaloniki in the north. The west of Crete (Chania) and inland is stunning and has bags of character. I'm rather fond of Athens its a little crazy (!) but theres lots of do and ideal for a few days if you want to get a ferry/fly onto another island. There are some large developed resorts across Greece but even on the same island you will be easily able to escape the hoards without much effort or expense (as in Corfu)

Wow guys, thanks for all the suggestions. A day's googling ahead. Want something booked ASAP.

Stoupa/Kardimili (Southern Peloppenese) is our favourite.

Now the Athens-Kalamata motorway is fully open it's around a four hour drive from Athens.

Absolutely spectacular beaches and scenery. In May the 9,000 ft mountain is snow capped while you swim in the comfortably warm sea. Great local food/wine, cheap and no Brits on the piss.

We had a great two weeks in Santorini last year. Fira was good for sightseeing and watch shops. Oia has the most amazing sun set. We stayed on the outskirts of Perissa and loved it.

If you're going to Mykonos wear two pairs of trunks otherwise it may not just be the credit card that takes a battering.

Another vote for Kefalonia, we have been to most Greek islands but went back to Kefalonia three times. Best explored with a hire car / scooter.

Stayed in Kefalonia 2 years ago.

    I stayed here

Literally 20 meters from the beach. Lovely restaurants walking distance. Fiskarda is a car drive away as is Myrtos beach. Stunning scenery, food and very relaxed!

    Have to second this.

Seen a lot of Greece and Stoupa is hard to beat. 2 very good sandy beaches, Kalogria beach shelves beautifully, and wonderful tavernas.

    Santorini gets my vote.

We have been 7 times and love it there.

    Absolutley stunning views and sunsets.

Looking forward to going back at the end of July for our daughters wedding.
