There is a music sub-forum, you know.
The John Grant "GMF" video is NSFW due to inappropriate language.
Around this time each year I post my favourite music from the last 12 months on Facebook for friends and family - I thought some of you you might like to check out what I chose.
(I can only include 3 videos in my message, so use the links if you want to listen to the rest).
I'd also be interested to see what other TZ-UK folk have particularly liked this year.
My top album of 2013: ‘Pale Green Ghosts’ by John Grant

______
Jim.
The All the Young Dudes forum says '…artists and music from yesteryear. No modern crap please!', so I didn't think it the right place for this run-down.
Besides, there is a good thread at the moment on George & Dragon about London Grammar.
I'll add a language warning re 'GMF' video.
Pale Green Ghosts is a great album, certainly on of my favourites this year. The album that really turned my head in 2013 was actually one from 2012 that I discovered late, Alt -j's An Awsome Wave. Arctic Monkeys AM is for me their best yet.
I thought this was ok:
Jonathan Wilson - Fanfare
AM is probably my favourite album of the year, and they are amazing live, sow them at glasto, and was about 3 people back when they did Manchester this year, that good we've already booked for London next May.
Rudimentals, Home Album is also a cracker, that's had a lot of air time in the office...
Not such a good year as last for me in terms of new material.
I've "discovered" Riverside this year & Shrine of New Generation Slaves is my top album of the year, closely followed by Fortress from Alter Bridge.
Other good-uns
Black Sabbath - 13
Big Country - The Journey
Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused To Sing
FM - Rockville
The Temperance Movement
Andy
Wanted - Damasko DC57
+1 from me for Black Sabbath 13. Much better than I expected it to be.
Also Queens of the Stone Age's "Like Clockwork".
On the single front I really enjoyed Robin Thicke with Blurred Lines and Daft Punk ft Pharrell Williams with Get Lucky.
I like your Aluna George pick , "Attracting Flies" - it's a tune I might have missed but heard it in the Barber shop once , didn't seem to get much airplay. Some good old chart pop with an edge.
Strong was another good shout.
Get Lucky was prob my song of the year. Heard it for the first time in France in early Spring not knowing who it was for sure, although it sounded Daft Punky. Suffered a bit from overplaying, over-exposure.
my other faves of this year are
La la la - Naughty boy
as it's that little bit different and the video is cool.
http://youtu.be/3O1_3zBUKM8
Cool - Le Youth
with a sample from R&B tune 'Me and You' by Cassie. Great Summer tune.
http://youtu.be/mbVux6XUtZY
Radioactive - Rita Ora
Got most of its airplay in 2013
http://youtu.be/uI6VfwBV8Gc
I have a whole list every year that I make as I go along throughout that year to make a 'Best of' compilation. Others on there include singles by Disclosure - White Noise, F for you, Latch), Beautiful by Mariah Carey and Miguel (soppy but good), Treasure and Locked out of Heaven by Bruno Marsand finally to cover the chart Hip Hop/RnB, Hold on (We're going home) by Drake (great mellow track), Hey Porsche by Nelly and F***** Problem by ASAP Rocky feat. Drake and Kendrick Lamar.

Like threads like this - gives me an opportunity to catch up on stuff I might have missed during the year - will now be buying Pale Green Ghosts.
Quite an obvious one, but Bad Blood by Bastille is a fantastic debut album.
For fans of 80's indie in the flavour of Teardrop Explodes/The Chameleons, Big TV by White Lies is a great album (although not as good as their previous two, which were superb).
Arcade Fire completely passed me by now but, on recommendation from someone who had been in a similar spot, I gave 'Reflektor' a listen and became hooked quickly. So much so, that I snapped up some tickets for their Earls Court visit next year. The title track is a great place to start - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7E0fVfectDo
Other than that, Chvrches came on my radar this year and I've listened to them a lot. Start with 'The Mother We Share' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mTRvJ9fugM

One of my favourites

I wonder how many of these "Top tunes" and albums from this year will be revered in the future as classic albums?
Cheers,
Neil.
Played this one a lot when I first purchased it early in the year.
Inhaler is a great track
z
This was one of the top singles for me, good video too
All this mostly seems to be guitar based music? Whilst I appreciate a good rock or "indy" song (I'm a big Cardiacs fan) I'd have to say that this rarely throws up great albums anymore, as I've heard it all before (I like the John Grant album, but it did remind me of loads of other bands)
So, to add some different flavour to the mix, here are my top albums of 2013.
Continue by Wax - brilliant rhyming, the guy plays guitar, bass, drums, sings and raps. Really well.
Stand out tracks would be these two:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fjON1YA32E
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNtBz4NDPVw
Then for latin Jazz / House we have Eclipse by Elements of Life (you can't go wrong with Little Louie Vega, right?)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etRK4ndwNO4
Tune of the year? Tough call. For me, probably Byron Moore's cover of Mama Used to Say
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UNXuXKirgA
So, some alternatives from the beat driven side of music in 2013.
Roll on 2014.
The Temperance Movement was definitely my favourite album/band of the year.
Now there's a blast from the past! I remember buying A Little Man... on the basis of Is This The Life? expecting it to be more of the same - how wrong I was, their music really treads the line between genuis and insanity. Some of it is very good though. Never really got around to listening to anything after On Land...
Interesting band.
On Land and In the Sea was the zenith of their music for me, although The Seaside takes a lot of beating.
Once you've seen them live a couple of times, you're hooked.
Sadly, it won't be happening any time soon as Tim Smith had a stroke a year or two back and is still not well.
Glad to find someone else who appreciates their genius.
For me a good few albums have been fabulous finds
Daft Punk
Oh Land
2 door Cinema Club
Pierces
Ellie Goulding
Lana Del Rey
Kodaline
Avicii
Cocco Rosie
Cake
Bon Iver
Capital Cities
Gin Wigmore
Dillon
Agnes Obel
Kristina Train
John Grant
Jimmy Grant and Junk Parlour
London Grammar
Ren Harvieu
Woodkid
There is a bunch more too
Release of the year had to be the new Alice in Chains album, much better than I'd expected.
Soundgarden's was good, Black Sabbath's was okay but you can hear hints of a lot of their other songs in there.
Friend of mine plays harpsichord and she did a revisit of Bach's concertos (for harpsichord) which was very enjoyable too.
Managed to get the EFI problem on the bike sorted out too and hearing that running properly was music to my ears...
MBV by MBV was a very pleasant surprise when it was released earlier in the year. Not an album for the uninitiated though.
Top marks for releasing it on vinyl too, cut from the analogue (not digital) master.
Agreed, I really warmed to this recently.
Also, that London Grammar album after recommendation on here and thanks for that Frank Turner tip - I've just been listening to that too after watching that video - great stuff.
I'm also listening to Kodaline - In A Perfect World.
A track from that...
I know what I like when I hear it, but not listening to the radio much I don't often pick up on new artists and albums. Reading this thread has given me some new ideas and some albums for the 'wish list', made all the better as I have some Amazon vouchers from Christmas to spend.
I came across Of Monster and Men quite by accident today. I just ordered the CD so I hope it's as good as they are live. I didn't even know I liked Icelandic Folk music.
My album of the year is Tookah by Emiliana Torrini...well worth the five year wait since her last one
Quite proud of myself for discovering Chvrches just under a month after their album was released too....not bad for someone that doesn't listen to music radio much these days
My favourite album of the year had to be my wee Sister-in-law's debut solo album; she sings traditional Scottish music (she is also in 'Malinky' who are on Spotify)
You can hear some sample tracks here: http://fionahunter.co.uk/ Despite being biased, she has an endearing yet haunting voice.
Have heard 2 or 3 somgs since the summer that I have really liked and was surprised that they were all by Rudimental, so them as well.
Alex Clare - Lateness of the Hour, fantastic album and artist.
