Thread: What Brogues are you wearing then? These anyone?

  1. #1051
I have just picked up a pair of George Cleverley ready to wear Henry brogues in brown scotch grain with dainite sole, the last shape is much better fit for me as I have a slim foot, the bourton 444 last of my trickers is way wider in comparison and not such a good fit. They are allegedly made by Crocket and Jones (Cleverley are mostly bespoke and made in London) but the last is slimmer/pointier and less of a country shape than most brogues.

Leather/construction wise they are way above Loake/Barker etc but that quality comes at a price!

I have several pairs of various Loakes, Grensons and Barkers but always return to these Chesters and their Burford brothers.

    You won't go far wrong

Gents I keep getting canvssed/spammed by Undandy whose website is very well designed (essentially you can design your own shoes/boots in whatever permutation you choose of style, colours etc). Has anyone here used them?

I doubt you are looking for serious answers, but here you go... rare shell Aldens (sold mostly over MSRP), maybe Vibergs to some extent.

    Thanks, they're quite wide fitting. I'm usually a 10 and they're a 9 (G Fitting)

Cheers bud. I watched the video on line of what they actually do and it is worth a look.

    http://www.loake.co.uk/repairs/

When you factor in high street would want £50 to do a decent leather sole job, £80 is pretty good for the shoes to be fully stripped down and re-shod on their original last and thats including them paying for the postage both ways.

    Enjoy the shoes

Trouble is, if you're lucky you can get anew pair of 1880s for £100.

You'd have to be very lucky to get a £220 pair of Chesters for £100.

I paid £140 in a sale maybe 3-4 years ago, so I have no problem with £80 to have my shoes back in A1 nick. I am also size 8.5 in Loake, not the most popular of size.

I also picked up a pair of Burford's a few months ago for £120 in a local stores sale which was a bargain for Chester's on steroids.

Church shoes with Commando soles. Now charging £120 for a complete resole, which seems pretty expensive. I'll need to find a good local cobbler.

Debenhams regularly do 50% off. And , you can sometimes get a further 10%.

I'm toying with the idea of a refurb for mine, they've been repaired by my cobbler a few times.

But I only paid £100 so not sure it's worth £80 to repair.

Can't wait to wear these now!

Also, apologies for the muddy floor, kids and rain don't mic

I've seen that video, it's very good. Here's mine after an application of Loake shoe cream yesterday:

If the soles have been repaired previously by someone else Loake won't touch them.

They've been repaired not resoled. But as much as I love them, I've worn them for over two years, I can't justify an £80 repair on a pair of shoes I paid £100 for.

You need some shoe trees there Rodder!

Nice Tricker's, but they'll end up creased like the Loakes without shoe trees.

I've got some, I just need to use them!!!

I've abused the black brogues but they're only work shoes. I don't treat them all that badly.

Twice a year I use Saphir followed by a polish. But I think I've left the black ones longer.

Cheaneys are a daily wearer. I love the Triple welts but they are really hard to put on so rarely get worn.

Except your cobbler will not have the last the shoe was originally built with. When you consider a resolve should give you 3-5 years use (if you have other shoes on rotation it's good value. £120 will buy you 2 pairs of crappy shoes that will not even see a resole.

No, a resole of Commando soles will give me less than a year of usage as my main shoes. I do a lot of walking every day!

Try an over/under lacing pattern and they should be a lot easier to deal with. I normally use it for fully-eyeletted boots as I not only like the look, but also find that there's significantly less friction and wear.

I have ridiculously narrow balletic feet. I used to wear 1880s which prior 2009 were narrow in an F, but they changed the fit to accommodate the more common standard foot size.

Any recommendations of where to start looking for narrow brogues? I love Sidi cycling shoes as they are very narrow - what's the brogue equivalent?

Have you tried Crockett & Jones, they do a narrow last.

The George Cleverly ready to wear range (made by Crockett and Jones) have a slim foot, they fit me much better than the trickers 444 last which is very wide. I'm a sidi wearer too so I think they are worth a try if you like the chisel toe shape.

What do you suggest for low instep? I have normal width feet, but low instep. Most of oxfords I tried are OK in length and width, but uppers are too roomy. I put insoles and wear thick socks, that helps a little, but my feet are sweating in the summer because of socks.

Go for a narrower last, less leather over the instep.

A chap from trickers (when they ran the eBay seconds store) sent me some self adhesive pads to cut in half and put under each side of the lace flaps to add bulk and enable the shoe to tighten fully, or you could put one under the tongue.
Any good cobbler should sell them.

    Time for a SOTC...

From top left: Loake Burford, C&J Harry, 3 x Cheaney Tweed C (2 are Superdry versions, the RHS are in need of a refurb!).
Middle row: Cheaney, Barkers, Oliver Sweeney, safety shoes (steel toe capped)
    Bottom: Tricker's, Barkers.

All bought since joining this forum. Thanks TZ!

Edit: the photo was pre-polishing. I was too knackered afterwards to take another photo!

OK, so I punted £155 (including delivery) on a pair of boots from Undandy.

The really cool thing about them is the “design your own” facility so you can pick contrasting or complementary leathers for different parts of the shoe or boot. I accordingly had a play, made my payment, and 3 weeks later these arrived:

Nicely styled, made in Europe (Portugal I think) and I will enjoy wearing them. Will they stand up to many days tramping around London as I do in my Hoggs of Fife or Loake brogues? I doubt it. I don’t want to do them a disservice and I will wear them and evaluate properly but at first sight they just don’t look as sturdy as British made shoes.

The quality of the leather is superb, like proper made in England Clarks from 40 years ago.

Managed to pick up a pair of Loake Woburn from the 1880 range at the weekend. Actually found them on the Loake stand in a Clark’s outlet shop at half the price of most online retailers, it was the first time I’ve seen any of the 1880’s in there.

I thought I'd change the colour of my Barker Black skull and crossbones brogued oxfords. The patina process took me an hour or so then a polish. I'm pleased with the result (they were previously tan and my inspiration the conkers I picked recently on a walk)

  45. #1095
I gave up on my Barker boots recently (I'd worn them 10 times at most and my feet were in bits each time).

Bought some Officine Creative boots, very comfortable, no problems at all. Officially twice the price, but 50% work discount made them affordable.

Anyone want my old Barkers, size 12 I think, hardly worn?

Great find, I'm not particularity fond of this particular shoe but I've got several pairs of 1880's and you've got yourself a great bargain there.

Give the Barkers a chance. Wear them regularly for a couple of weeks to break them in. Once you do they'll give you years of service.
