Any IT execs on here? Help needed...

    Hi Guys,

I'm wondering if there're any IT execs - IT Managers, Directors, etc, etc - on here who could help me out with something. We are trying to get over the line with some research into attitudes around Cloud Computing and need a few more responses to make the research statistically significant. We have sent out various email shots and the like but there's nothing like a bit of personal begging!

If you are in an IT role could you spare 5 minutes (it REALLY shouldn't take any longer than that) to fill in the survey to be found at:

    http://cap.bathwickgroup.com/ibm/cloud_assessment/

Anyone filling it in will receive a copy of the findings and will also get entered into a prize draw for a Kindle Fire HD. Obviously you need to fill the survey in properly - not just ticking the same box over and over again! There is some checking in there to ensure they are kosher responses otherwise they get treated as invalid.

    Any help greatly appreciated, guys!

    cheers,

    Simon

    Doing the survey now.

I presume question 3, "Rate how concerned your organisation is about the following critical business risks", refers specifically to these risks in the context of the cloud?

    **edit**

Doesn't matter now. I think I've given a meaningful answer no matter what.

    Survey now done. :-)

Filled in; although as part of a SMB managed service provider, it does feel like slightly cheating!

A final note to say thank you to everyone who took time out to do this. We have the numbers we need for it to be statistically significant now and work is progressing on writing up the reports and summaries so I suspect any new ones will end up being ignored so no more please. Really, really appreciate the help guys! Thank you again.

It's not perfect but our experience of Google Apps makes me wonder why anyone bothers with the faff and expense of running an Exchange server, especially in an SME.

O365 is the now the ms solution for an SME rather than running a server in-house

Done, hope it helps. The focus of my role at the moment is to move our infrastructure into the cloud and I only wish I could get it done sooner.

It depends on the services you're looking for. Although you could have a mixture of both, it's often easier to have all your IT in the same place so you know who to blame when it goes wrong! ;)

Even though you had the numbers required I filled it in anyways :)

I'm looking at O365 now as I don't want to run exchange, or hire those who run it for me. However, in my line of business the cloud is a huge risk.

We're adopting it where we can, but our footprint isn't high.

(I'm in financial services/payments, and filled in the survey a few days ago)

I'd like to say it's less of a risk then you might think. "The cloud" is such a ridiculous buzzword! Your business operations should look at multiple cloud solutions that offer varying levels of security according to the level of data being transmitted. Office365 is great for exchange and day to day running, but you have to adopt the process of not transferring data of high security cost via email. The sooner businesses stop doing this the better. Cloud services are not where the risk is, business operations are.

For example, I have recently implemented a cloud based file sharing solution for a client of ours who are accountants. This allows their clients to upload their sage account files via their website into a secure AES-256 bit encrypted data vault that is stored encrypted in ISO-27001 data centres. The files are then downloaded, stored and assessed, for a finite amount of time, wherein they are destroyed. The accountants have their data that they need; their clients have peace of mind; and none of the data has been leaked outside of the system. Any data that "could have been" intercepted by outside influences, would be encrypted.
Much safer than an email with an excel spread sheet ;)
