End of an era. (Landrover content) - now with replacement!

I've been in Qatar for six and a half years now, and for all that time, I've run the same 1993 Landrover Discovery V8. I bought it used when I first arrived, and it's been a good servant - we've had a few fights, she's left me on the side of the road a few too many times, but overall, we've been happy together.

But recently, the case for bangernomics just hasn't been adding up. She's been spending more and more time in the garage, and recently, her deterioration has accelerated. So it's time to say good-bye. Just thought I'd share this sad moment with you.

She's an ex-cop car, so plenty of extra holes drilled in odd places. Her fuel economy has always been crap, but never mind - in the interests of peace and harmony, I'll not tell you how much petrol costs here. She cost me about £3000, and she's now worth about a third of that here. Not too bad for six years of motoring. We've had a couple of little shunts and bumps, and without exception, she's always come off best, and kicked the hell out of the other car!

Here are a couple of photos taken last night - I should have given her a final clean, I know...

nice motor mate, landrovers are a british icon (now owned by ford). I used to have an old 3a lwb. it allways came off unscathed invariably demolishing anything in its path, cars bollards ect. Only prob was i had to do a 3 point turn to get round some corners, turning circle was huge. Fuel economy was poor and made me so! After various weld jobs new doors soft tops ect i sold my tonka truck and bought a normal car but by eck i miss it some. Allways dreamt of driving it to africa or india but never made it, just as well probably would've had to abandon it somewhere on route. Happy memories!!

Hey, that Disco looks like it's only just been run-in Walter, loads of life left in it. :)

Propper chassis, aluminium body - run forever that will. :) :)

I'm on my second Disco, (5 cylinder common rail diesel), and it's planned to last me till I can't drive any more. Can't say that about modern monocoque rust buckets.
    Best Regards - Peter

I'd hate to be with you when you're on your own.

    :) Thanks, folks!

She's started to fail electrically - bloody Lucas! She'll make a mechanically minded someone a great car, for sure. The Pakistani, Indian and Sri Lankan garages out here are wizards at keeping things going far beyond their nataural (European/Western) life. But I've had enough of standing on the sides or roads!

My "new" Disco is a '91 200Tdi that I bought to give me time to rebuild my "old" '88 V8 110. It costs about GBP 2.50 to fill it and will do nearly 600Km on a long run.
    Regards, Jon.

And here's the replacement. 2007 Forester, with the 2.5 non-turbo flat four engine. Picked it up on Thursday evening, just in time for the biggest sandstorm of the year!

My first ever new car... :P

Nice Forrester. I bought my first Subie last October and I love it. It's a 2007 STI Limited.

If you ever want to know anything about your new Subie drop by http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/index.php?

That is the most knowlegeable forum out there. They are not nearly as friendly as the folks on here and are really harsh on anyone that asks questions without seaching first but it is the forum for Subies.

    Congrats and enjoy!

That looks bloody horrible! Wouldn't like to sort that out...!

I think the hardest off roading I'll do is bouncing over a curb, looking for a parking space. And thanks for the link, Grath - I'll have a look!
