I think gulfman is about sailing, or summat (is it tides or compass this one has?).
Riseman about airborne or mountain sports (altimeter).
Can anyone point me to a succinct list of the G-Shock ranges and their particular specialisations?
So far I've got these:
MR-G Top of the range? MT-G Top of the range? (How are they different from MR-G?) G-Lide Surfers' watches, tide and moon information. Mudman Err.. muddy pursuits? Gulfman ? Frogman Diving specific? Riseman ? G-Aviation Aviation inspired? Rangeman New ABC G-Shocks Giez ? Baby-G Small size

You can add Gulfman - Rust Resist and Riseman - Twin Sensor G-Shock (with alti, not compass like the Mudman).
MT-G - One down from MR-G, we don't see now see MR-G models outside of Japan usually. Metal Twisted G - MT-G. Metal bracelets, with resin bodies sandwiched between metal back and bezel.
Gulfman - Use of titanium instead of stainless steel.
Giez - I believe was intended as a more 'European' watch. Is a traditional metal body with a screwback, yet only comes with resin straps so far as I can see. As a metal-bodied screwback certain people may see this as preferable to to an MT-G.
It's also useful to pay attention to the module numbers and families. For example, compare the MR-G 8100, GW2000 and Giez GS 1150 - sure you're paying for the case as well, but would you really miss self correcting 'tough movement' hands on the cheaper models?
EDIT:
Mudman - was originally a model with rubber covering the push buttons to stop them getting bunged up with mud. Now is a series of models with that feature but advertised as 'for rallying' or 'muddy pursuits' as you say (e.g. the timers on the g9000).
