    Fun

Though it would be nice to be on the same continent with some of the guesses

That's half an hour I won't get back! 10,800 the best so far. You do get better with practice though.

It's all about details: e.g. when it looks like the USA, look at the positions of the road signs or the LH/RH steering wheels: often, it's Oz or NZ. Some brands (Petrobras) are South America only etc. Sometimes I'm waaaaay off: I pointed Australia, turned out to be South Africa...

12,796 - let down by my lack of knowledge on Thailand - I didn't realise they drove on the left too

Very addictive - and a great way to use Google Earth.

I've done just over 12,000 points, but mostly get around 10,000. The ones that put you on a road in the middle of nowhere are rather tough!
So clever my foot fell off.

The colours of the road signs are a giveaway, too (e.g. Oz).

I find the markings on the road useful as well. Still haven't cracked 12k points though...

11580. I was surprised I did as well as I did- the first one I didn't realise you could zoom in on the map before placing your guess. Are you allowed to move around or do you have to guess from where you are?

I don't think I am going to beat my first attempt- that time round I had 2 locations on islands in the middle of the pacific somewhere so NO chance.

Your guess was 22.504 km from the correct location and gave 5000 points.

    Right, that's me done.

5000 points for 22.5 km off seems awfuly high in some ways...

Your guess was 0.007 km from the correct location and gave 6479 points.

What can I say - perhaps some are easier than others.

FWIW, mine was a bridge across some islands near Miami.

Perhaps yours was a pic of Tower Bridge. Who knows - perhaps you should email the site owner and ask.

No offence intended, thinking about again it it would make sense when the maximum possible error, presumably scoring zero, is half a world away. :)

Ah, oops I was trying to be humorous with the Tower Bridge thing but clearly failed - that'll teach me to try and multitask with work late at night.

The key appears to be to look around for clues. For example on one I found an advert for Cerpa Gold, which I now know is a Brazilian beer.

What a great way to waste time!

Not sure what "cheating" consists of in this game!

Consider what we would do if placed in this position in real life. You would start walking until you found something that was helpful to you in working out where you are- road signs, something with local language on it etc. I suppose the challenge could be to guess where you are within a set time period- say 5 mins?

Standing in the one spot swivelling your head this way and that doesn't seem the best way to use your time.

I just scored 19013, due to getting two really easy ones (road signs that gave it away), and three where I wasn't too far away.

North American plains are difficult, as similar looking locations can be thousands of miles apart. It's the same with Africa. Parts of Texas and Florida look a lot like parts of Australia. Still, it's fascinating how easily you can identify the correct continent/country from a picture of an anonymous crossroads.

This is a lot of fun.

My first go I found myself in a football stadium (I thought google cars only drove around on roads!) with the team's name written all over it! :)

I was given the inside of the Allianz Arena. Anyone know where that is, off the top of their head?

Very addictive. Top score so far has been just over 19000 but I had the benefit of being dropped next to two municipal signs and I also guessed a random Russian city within 600km. Averaging at around 9-10k - I suppose it depends on how much time you have to move around and also a bit of luck (on an earlier go I landed on the Sydney Harbour Bridge ). Also, it's limited to countries with street view and that hasn't exactly taken over the world, yet. Only one landing in the UK so far; Scotland somewhere.
    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

Well the total mentioned averages over 5,570 per go. That means getting to within a handful of km five times in a row...

Managed 25,167 no cheating just went up the road until I could read a helpful sign.

Would have been better but only got 30 points for my last one, the bastards dropped me in a back garden in south America ! There was no way out and absolutely no clues :-(

A tad over 18,000 was my highest score.

The guy who pointed me towards this is a geography teacher. He ends his his lessons every time with Geoguessr. His pupils are all in: highest scores (print outs) are on the wall of his classroom and there's a fierce competion between classes.

I thought the idea was to guess from where it dropped you - if you go far enough you'll always find a sign to tell you where you are, sort of takes the guess out of Geoguessr.
