It all depends on the tech you have available. Fibre will always beat copper (or aluminium if you're unlucky). Additionally with ADSL your distance from the exchange matters.
I'm on Talktalk ADSL LLU and get 14-17Mbs download, 850Kbs upload, being 600m from my exchange.

We get 8meg out in the sticks, although a pal near Elgin only gets 2meg (yes, broadband!)

I get 6.5meg on my phone via HSPA+

A massive 1.8Mb - how crap is that from BT.

Cable is not an option for us either.

Seriously living in the country sucks at times, we pay more for petrol, we have crap public transport, our roads are shocking, we do not even have street lighting, yet our rates are over £2K a year!!

Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.

    Re: broadband speeds

I would not buy a house with poor internet. It's an important part of my life, sad as that sounds.

I live in the countryside, but I would hardly call Central Bedfordshire remote. It is currently hovering around 3.5meg these days, which is a radical improvement from the 1meg I was getting not so long ago.

We had 50meg three years or more ago in town...

What is frustrating is that cable is available to homes a few hundred yards from us, but not where we are. I truly hope we get proper fast broadband in the next couple of years, because what we have really isn't any good for much more than surfing the web these days. It isn't good enough for on-demand stuff.

Still, it's a small price to pay for living where we do in my opinion.
So clever my foot fell off.

Sky Fibre, a lot better than my old house (used to get 2.0 down / 0.38 up) and that was just down the road.
It really does depend on where you live and if your lucky enough to live on a (fibre) enabled exchange.

Mobile signal; the sun must shine right out of your a*** ( in a Monty Python voice). Got no gas either. Internet may as well be provided by two men with semaphore flags doing 1's and 0's, given todays speed...

Luxury! We used to dream of owning a second-hand semaphore flag, so we could signal machine-code to t'other side of valley....

Got Virgin broadband here, generally pretty good on download speed. BT seem to allow faster upstream speeds.

Live the sticks and get 1 mb at the router but have to have wireless to the computer upstairs and then it's about half a meg at times. It's painful

A pair of PLC adaptors may give better performance for connecting to the upstairs PC.

Ee are T-Mobile and Orange. Three are rolling out their DC-HSPDA network which offers faster speeds. I just happened to catch them on a good day. It is the fastest I've seen but was repeatable over 5 tests.

I have no 4G, I have no Fibre Optic. Lucky I have running water and electricity to be honest.

Bit ridiculous that the UK is so far behind the rest of the world on these innovations which people have been enjoying abroad for months/years but I don't like to complain because some people are living without food and water so I'm sure I'll survive.
