Either buy a sub or save up another few hundred quid and get a sea dweller, ultimate sports watch IMO.

As per your original post a PO would be a good shout.

I'd be seriously considering a used WC Aquatimer too.

That would be my choice A real nice clean watch which won't / shouldn't lose value.

I have the Pepsi GMT Master 2, still to see another in the wild But I always hankered after the ND. I see the regular sub on 2 my friends on a weekly basis. I've never seen the ND in the wild.

SD for a £3k + a few hundred? Wishfull thinking IMHO. If a Rolex is your choice OP, then a 14060 Submariner is a good choice, or maybe with a bit of luck or a bit of extra cash a 16610 Submariner Date, 16710 GMT or an older Explorer 1 or 2. Box and papers may be a problem within budget on some of the pricier models.

I think the first three responses would take it, and probably in that order.

As I have those watches my choice is the Tudor Pelagos.

But I'd be happy with a host of different Omega watches from £1000 used.

I think I'd track down an Omega 2254 and another watch for £3k if that was my budget.
It's just a matter of time...

For £3000 you could have a Speedy Pro AND a Seamaster 2254 or 2264 - which together cover pretty much all your bases...

Exactly. All depends on what you want - either two perfectly good but different watches. Or one much more expensive watch and a G-shock ;)

Planet ocean 8500, Tudor Black Bay, Tudor Pelagos, Bremont Martin Baker, Bremont Supermarine. Those would be my choices

Comes in well under budget and comes with a rubber strap as well.

That could be an option , I've been offered a 2009 Americas cup chrono for £1900 , which would leave some for an everyday watch

My choices would be Tudor Heritage Black Bay or TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 1887 Chronograph or Breitling Superocean Heritage 42 or maybe one of the Longines Column-Wheel Chronographs.

Can't go wrong with a 14060 ND sub. The prices seem to be creeping up though recently unless I'm imagining it!

That's a very good looking watch with the same fantastic hands and lume as the 2264/2254. And chrono pushers you can safely use underwater. Chrono/diver bases covered - I'd be pretty happy with one of those myself.

The £1100 balance, if it were mine, would go towards something classic, dressy, or good for travel. How about a Seamaster GMT 2234.50? Though that would give you the same handset and similar dial and bezel? Apart from that or a Rolex, you'll find very few real "travel" GMTs around with the quick-set hour hand. Most have a so-called "independent" GMT hand which is fine for the office, but no good for travel. Omega have an excellent quartz movement in their SMP and AT range, with a quick-set hour hand, that can be reset when you travel without stopping the movement. I've the Omega SMP 2264, which I like, but it's too close to the SMP AC Chrono in style, so I'd choose the Aqua Terra Quartz instead, which you should be able to find within your budget. It's a bit more shiny, but robust, with classic styling:

The aqua terra is a good choice for second watch. Not many 150m dressier options out there. I picked one up the other month in black dial & it looks fantastic to me.

Another vote for the Black Bay. IMHO the most beautiful out there at the moment, and you may even have a little cash to spare afterwards.

An Omega Aqua Terra 8500 should be available at that price level - it's more adaptable than a straight dive watch IMO.

My AD had the AQ annual calender reduced to £3k last year and I thought about it for 24 hours - 24 hours too long, as it had gone by the time I went back with the intention of buying it :(

And yet another vote from me, although as an owner I might be slightly biased! That said, is this to be your only watch? If so, you need to decide whether you would be happy with with one watch or whether buying two with the same money would be a better idea? I say that because recently I've been considering selling mine and buying a couple of replacements (I fancy another Speedmaster and an Aerospace) simply because one watch is not enough!

Sub would be the wise, safe bet and a worthy contender if that's something you've always hankered after.

But, there's a whole world of watches beyond...

I'd seriously consider Bremont, although they have plenty of detractors.

    Submariner

Of course, the other advantage of buying a Submariner is that it'll always be worth whatever you pay for it. Spend £3k on a Submariner today and you'll get it all back, or more, when you decide to sell it. I know you shouldn't buy a watch based on it's resale value, but nobody can deny that it is a factor. Just avoid buying new!

Can you get these for £3k?

I am looking for one as my first "real" watch purchase, but the cheapest I have seen is £3,795 (excluding some dubious watches on eBay).

Prices are creeping up - but depending on if you want a full set with all papers/boxes and booklets etc. you should get a watch for £3k and shouldn't have to pay more than £3500 for all but the newer COSC model.

When you say "newer" what age are you referring to? I have been looking at five years old or less. Should I be looking a bit older?

Personally I would be more inclined to save a tiny bit more and hunt around for a JLC Master Compressor. It would be far more interesting and much rarer than the common or garden Rolex and Omega divers.

I bought one a few months ago and there were examples for around the £3700 mark.

Having said that, I paid just over 4 for mine.

Yes, I think they updated the model - well the dial - in late 2007, so earlier would be good. You could get both in Z serial and I do indeed have one of each in Z serial - the last of one and the first of the other.

Personally, I'd pay a bit more for the COSC version - as they only made them for 4 and a bit to 5 years - but on a good day I always wear my "Swiss" only 14060, with less writing on the dial.
