A curious incident with my PRS-25 this morning

I have gotten into the habit of leaving my watch on the window sill overnight. When I got up this morning and went to put my watch on, it felt unusually cold and in the process of doing the strap up, the crystal fell out on the floor.

I was a bit surprised but managed to press it back in and it has stayed in. Has anyone else had this happen to any of their watches? The only annoyance is that I've spotted a speck of dust on the inside of the crystal :(

Also, before anyone has a go, I've already mailed our gracious host and I'm not sure whether to try and replicate the conditions to see if it happens again or just wear and hope it doesn't.

The coefficient of thermal expansion is much higher for acrylic than steel (5 - 15 times higher), which means that it will shrink much more in cold weather than the surrounding steel of the case. The best fix is to find a crystal that has a metal ring on the inside, forcing the crystal outwards against the case.

And I can source that from any competent watchmaker I take it?

That temperature may have played a part and if it happens again then send it back to him.

Actually thinking of replacing the crystal now

Why would anyone leave their lovely , precious watch on a cold, drafty windowsill?

True, but still, ironically - you wouldn't wanna take it mountaineering.
To the OP - speak to Eddie, see what he says, doesn't sound good to me.

Exactly, all of my Precista watches are tough and dependable in even the most extreme situations, I would want my Smiths to be the same or perhaps even more so for a model such as the "Everest"?

Doesn't sound good considering eddies homages usually have a lot of emphasis on improvement of design.

I was once told that a press fit acrylic will pop out easily (i used one in a Seiko mod) unless cemented or has a metal expansion ring of some sort.

Wouldn't put me off buying one, but does seem silly having to treat an 'explorer' watch gently!!! Didn't this happen to another Everest owner on here?

How does this affect water resistance ?

I'm thinking about buying this watch but this thread made think...is the crystal popping off a legit concern? I ask because I would wear the watch in cold sub zero conditions, since it gets really cold here during the winter. Reading the above post about the crystal jumping out due to watch sitting overnight on a window sill is quite alarming.

Maybe you should ask the other 340-odd owners what they think?

Whole chunks of my life come under the heading "it seemed like a good idea at the time".

What do you mean? This is not good place to ask?

I go hill walking with mine in pretty tough conditions and have had no problems at all. I treat it as my tool watch with no worries.

I've been skiing with mine, no problems.

more like the sampling rate in this thread is too small.

No problems with my Everest, been swimming with mine no issues.
It is one of the best value watches out there full stop. You must try one before you die or regret it for eternity!
