Nice dress watch sub 40mm - suggestions for under £800

Any suggestions for a nice sub 40mm dress watch for under £800?
Something that doesn't cost the Earth but looks really classy and not cheap looking?
    Well made?
Not too toolish looking, edging more on dressy.
Possibly understated & sophisticated but not "Blingy"

Possible complications or features include but are not restricted to...

    Blued hands
    Small seconds dial
    Date
    Power reserve indicator
    Display back
Decent movement - not too innacurate
    White or black dial
Gold indices/hands in contrast to SS case
Even a chrono is not out

    Etc...

    Any ideas?

How about the Seiko Premier range? Possibly a bit bigger than your 40mm limit but certainly not blingy. Admittedly, the style is an acquired taste.

Alternatively, the Oris Arteliers are nice too but maybe too uncomplicated looking for you for less than £800?

    The Best

Best price/quality on a watch of that price range : www.marcelloc.de
Take a look at the NETTUNO range. Is one step above my beloved Seikos.
    Hope you like it.

All reads like something from Nomos, but the price point is going to cause some head scratching..

Something that doesn't cost the Earth but looks really classy and not cheap looking?
    Yep.
    Well made?
    .. can't complain about mine.
Not too toolish looking, edging more on dressy.
    .. .. Yep.
Possibly understated & sophisticated but not "Blingy"
.. certainly not, unless you go for the YG versions and they're romping well into four figures.

Possible complications or features include but are not restricted to...
    Blued hands
    Small seconds dial
    Yes on both counts.
    Date
    Power reserve indicator
both of these will up the price of a Nomos offering - you'd be looking at pre-loved rather than new for c800..
    Display back
Decent movement - not too innacurate
Yes on both - former is c100UKP (if that) more than SS backed versions, and it's rude to not get that with a Nomos unless you are fixated on making it as thin as possible, they're slightly
higher with the sapphire back). Accuracy - stunningly so - mine's good for a couple of secs/day.

    White or black dial
Gold indices/hands in contrast to SS case
.. ah. gold indices. Hmm. That suggests an Orion, or a Tetra Karat perhaps?

That does all seem Nomos, but you'll struggle on some of the features for the money..

PR & date are I think where you'd be doing well at the price for a Nomos, even pre-owned. For Dial+display back, you can, if you fish around the 'bay for instance, pick
them up for less than your budget, and have rather a handy pile of spare change.

That was to be my next question/s

  11. #11
Does it have to be new?

If not then how about a clean vintage Omega Seamaster? Might not be quite as accurate as you want but you cant get more class than that for under £800 in my opinion.

How about a Christopher Ward? It's £50 over your budget and at 43mm slightly bigger than you asked but I think it's a cracking looking thing

And now on with the C.W. bashing

    Another vote for NOMOS.
Pre-owned would just be in budget - I picked this one up from SC for £750 (& sold it recently)

    .. one thing that the OP could do is widen the net a little - Nomos pre-owned UK prices are quite strong;
but if you're willing to buy from Europe and fish around the 'bay for a bit, you can do very well. Mine
came from Italy at a good deal less than the budget cited here.

Nomos is a great shout, but how about the upper reaches of Seiko's JDM's Spirit range, see them at Seiya's site - I'm talking about the 6R15 ones.

The Union Glashutte Noramis 40mm is close to your target at £900 on chrono24... I think it's beautiful =P

Stowa Partitio is about £419 including VAT. It is 37mm.

These are not my watches or photos. I do have a Stowa flieger which I quite like so I have no problem recommending Stowa.

Supposedly a white dialed hand winding version may be coming.

Well there is a Tissot Visodate on SC at the moment that looks very classy and well under budget. Would be tempted myself if I hadn't bought 6 watches this month!

I had exactly the same decision to make and went with the stowa marine. Beautiful watch.

The more I look at this thread the more I think that the Nomos is a very special watch indeed.

Redmonaco's Longines Conquest Chronograph on Sales Corner ticks many of your boxes.

No retail, as they aren't made anymore. That actual watch went for 900, but you should be able to grab one for 800, maybe less.

In fact, I might have another one for sale soon!

I quite liked my Jean Perret watch for a dress watch. Cheap, comfortable with a classic narrow look. Hardly ever worn as prefer my IWC UTC though :)ImageUploadedByTapatalk HD1343742064.898014.jpg

Unsure how to delete my previous post, as JP isn't neither 40mm nor a Sub. Sorry :(

    Some more power reserve suggestions:

Save £600 and get a 40mm Orient Power Reserve?

I quite like the Mido power reserve watches too but they are 42mm...
