MK II vantage if you can find one
What other alternatives (cheaper) are out there for the Rolex Explorer 1 or Omega Railamaster.
I'm thinking 36mm as a preference but up to 39mm would also be OK.
If possible pics and links if applicable?
Up to £600-700 max quid either new or pre-owned.
Cheers
Neil.

Hamilton?
Not quite the same but kind of similar. If you squint :)
That Hamilton is nice, whats the model number of that >?
kungfugerbil
Which Hamilton is that?
Thanks
That Hamilton is the fantastically-named "Thin-o-matic" 38mm. I think the model code is H38415731.
That Hamilton is a Jazzmaster, spotted it earlier at Creation Watches:

Edit - actually, this one is slightly different, my apologies!

I'd say check out the PRS 25 tiny bit bigger than you requested but certainly in the Explorer mold, and cheap as chips.
Second-hand Tudor Ranger - a real one with the shield logo, not a fake with the Tudor Rose and 'Ranger' written in red.
Or how about an original Smiths Everest, like mine

Something from BALL? Trainmaster maybe.
These guys have some similar watches:

There is no alternative to an Explorer. Its a fools errant to try and find one.
I've the Zeno Explorer and the Sandoz 3-6-9, but even on my small wrist they were to tiny....
.... for me the MKII felt best Size 39 mm, sapphire crystal and solid bracelet
Bernhardt Watch Company in North Carolina makes excellent watches for the value. I'm wearing the Binacle Anchor now and it's a great watch. You can find a full review here: http://rosswatchreview.com/2010/10/2...anchor-review/
the website is to view or purchase is: http://www.bernhardtwatch.com/

David.
Neil, have you tried a Smiths PRS-29a? Obviously hand wound but probably a good match size-wise and I get the impression you prefer straps to bracelets?
There's the older 2nd generation Seiko Alpinist:
I think the Sinn 656 makes a good alternative. Obviously a flieger watch not a polar explorer. But to the untrained eye, it's a reasonably sized plain watch with 3-6-9 (and 12 thrown in for free). Sorry cant work out how to post a picture from iPhone.
What's not to like.

I've just got a used MKII Vantage. Size and overall quality is amazing. I wonder if the Smiths Everest (still available as new) wouldn't match the feel and quality oh this - I'd bet yes.
The everest from TF is my first suggestion.
The Hamilton Thin-o-matic is superb...
Another suggestion rather datejust like but same case and price is OK:

Zeno Explorer. I have the ETA version and its very nice indeed, both on the bracelet and on a db10 tapered Corfam. (May be flipping soon)
I doubt it will even get to SC!

How about the Sinn 556? Not a blunt homage, something a bit different but with a great reputation of its own.
What the..... This thread is 2 years old man!
And the answer is Steinhartt - but still, i just wasted 5 mins reading this old guff
Am I the only one who thinks "Jazzmaster" sounds like some weird innuendo? ;)
