The nicest yet (vintage Seiko content)

I've enjoyed some fantastic vintage Seiko watches, from a 1960's GS to some near-perfect iconic dive watches from the seventies. However, when it comes to divers I think this has to be the nicest I've had yet.

I picked it up as NOS from one of the moderators over at SCWF (not cheap, but perfect examples of anything never are), and being a 6309-7290 it has the slimmer case than the better known 704X series. I think that makes it very, very wearable and for a 1987 watch it's really quite a contemporary style (well let's face it, it's not all that different from the SKX's).

I have it on a Zulu at the moment, but some time ago I ordered one of Harold's hammer bracelets with SKX end links. Unfortunately, when it arrived I found that one of the links to which the end links attach had a defect and wouldn't take a spring bar; accordingly I have another link on the way, but it may be a few days before it lands here in the UK. For now, I'm not too bothered, and you can probably see why...

Yes, which explains why I said it's from 1987 - do try to keep up ;)

The most obvious difference is the position of the crown and the resulting length of the lower right lug. On the 6309's the crown is at 4 whilst the SKX's have their crown at 3.45 (ish) with a longer lug in the latter as a result. The 6309's also have the larger sized lume pip in the bezel insert and a different profiling to the rear of the case near the crown. The 6309's have bi-directional, ball-bearing 60 click indexed bezel, the SKX uni-directional 120 click. My experience of the second generation 6309's is that the dials age really badly, much much worse than those on the first gen watch and so to find one with a mint dial is a challenge to say the least. I also reckon the 6309 is a better movement. What else? SKX has 200m water resistance with press-in crystal seated on a nylon gasket; the 6309 150m with a crystal seated on a stepped rubber gasket and held in place with an aluminium bezel sitting beneath the turning ring.

Thanks very much for that, Martin! Probably worth mentioning that the case profile between the lugs is close enough that bracelets are interchangeable. I should be able to demonstrate that any time now (drums fingers on desk)...

The end links are stamped with "Y035". Unfortunately this is all i know. I've been searching the web for more information regarding this bracelet but didn't find anything. The pepsi was made in 1982 and the seller claimed that he bought it new including the bracelet back in the 80's in a US Army PX in Italy.

It is in really nice condition so I have no reason to doubt his words...









I asked another Seikoholic in the US because he posted a picture showing a 6309-729A on the same kind of bracelet some time ago but he also had no idea about the bracelet. Here is his picture:
