Bit late to the party but we watched 12 Year A Slave the other night.

Great performances, graphic and truly encapsulating.

Just watched Rogue 1. Think I enjoyed it more than any of the others, well apart from The Empire Strikes back, what ever number that was..

Yesterday I saw Kristen Stewart () in "Personal Shopper." It's been getting a lot of four-star reviews so thought I'd give it a go. Afraid it was not really my cup of tea. I can see where a serious film devotee might see it as a four-star movie, but its ambiguity and confusion were a bit too much for me to absorb and appreciate. Stewart was excellent, as usual, and quite fetching!

    Lion

    Watched 'Lion' the other night.

I didn't have a clue what to expect as I hadn't heard a thing about it. It was surprisingly good, but not one for the 'guns and explosions' film fans.

After watching Arrival last week, I rewatched Contact and really enjoyed it again. It's a little saccharine in parts, but deals with similar themes to Arrival.

Also watched The Discovery on Netflix. Again not perfect but quite a clever low-budget sci-fi where a scientist discovers proof of life-after-death, and how the world reacts. Worth a watch.

    Arrival

Arrival made a decent change from your regular Hollywood 'aliens have invaded' flick with a reasonable (even if a bit too obvious to see coming) twist at the end.

    Don't breathe and hidden figures.

Different ends of the spectrum but both were very good.

Logan turned out to be much, much better than I anticipated. Finally the character as mature as it has always been intended to be.
    Best Wolverine one for sure.

Caught Ip Man on Saturday. I know it's been around for a while but just never got round to watching it. I'm glad I did though - great film.

I watched The Prestige on Sunday - one of the best films I've ever seen, reminded me of the feeling I had when I watched The Usual Suspects at the end.

Also, Rogue One last night...three words - OH MY GOD.

What we did on our holiday - a very good film with Billy Connolly and David Tennant, not the latest film out (2014) but it'll make you laugh and warm the cockles of your heart too.

  13. #3863
I think it has been shown on UK TV before now but I hadn't until recently caught "McCullin". It was hidden in the depths of Netflix.

Very powerful. Also a reminder of the long-gone age in popular journalism when a big-selling Sunday newspaper would cover heavy stories, rather than lifestyle features on which to hang adverts.

Train to Busan.. It was so good that neither of us noticed that the cat vomited on the rug (Right in front of us.) until it finished.

I must recommend 'The Handmaiden'. Hard to explain why without giving anything away, but it's not exactly family viewing - from the director of the unbelievably violent 'Old Boy'. Beautiful, clever, and pretty saucy.

Also probably everyone missed 'Everybody wants some!!!!' which is really special if you'd enjoy an atmospheric wonder around a very early 80s American college that vaguely follows up 'Dazed and Confused'. You will end up wanting to join the baseball team and grow a moustache.

Have to agree with the above, so much better than you'd imagine, more influenced by 70s b-movie horror and Taxi Driver than anything to do with X-men - which makes perfect sense for a character with blades grafted onto his hands. Patrick Stewart deserves a best supporting actor award for his sweary portrait of demented old age. Completely transcends its genre, a genuine surprise.

    Enjoyed Allied last night

In 1942, a Canadian intelligence officer in North Africa encounters a female French Resistance fighter on a deadly mission behind enemy lines.
When they reunite in London, their relationship is tested by the pressures of war.

Saw four films on the plane recently.

Hacksaw Ridge - Really exciting and a bonus with it being true

Fences - Enjoyable story of a black family in 50's Pittsburgh.

Dr Strange - Although I used to enjoy the comics, the film was cak, with old horse face doing a cod American accent.
    Nil points.

Star Wars film - Pony, but admittedly not my sort of thing.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

    ...Hacksaw ridge...
Indeed, a good film. A little worried knowing that Mel Gibson's name is on the poster(...) it turned out to be a good film.

    Epic fail...

Sat down to watch the original Texas Chanisaw Masacre this evening and it was the bl00dy 2003 version.

I even quoted "...this looks pretty recent for an old movie".

    Haha.

Two Department Q films on BBC are excellent, they're in Danish with subtitles. I've read the books which are very good and they stay fairly true to them although not as much humour as the books
Highly recomended if you like a bit of Nordic noir

Just realised there is a third that must have recorded on my Sky box last night, bonus!

    I watched Sand Castle recently.

Set during the occupation of Iraq, a squad of U.S. soldiers try to protect a small village.

Not bad - maybe a bit slower paced that the likes of Black Hawk Down etc but delivers a message nevertheless.
Good acting from a good cast too.

    Enjoyed Colossal recently...

Gloria is an out-of-work party girl forced to leave her life in NY and move back home. When reports surface that a giant creature is destroying Seoul, she gradually comes to the realization that she is somehow connected to this phenomenon.
Quirky, original & amusing. Worth a viewing IMHO.

Just watched Richard Gere give one of his best performances in "Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer."

I was expecting to see an "OK" film, but what I got was a brilliant story, exquisite acting, talented and adept direction, and a very satisfying conclusion. I found out afterwards that Rotten Tomatoes rated it "Certified Fresh" at 89%! Recommended wholeheartedly.

He's great in it! Some weird/odd elements to the rest of the film, but worth a watch just for him.

I went to see Guardians of the Galaxy II this afternoon with my boys. 136mins of easy entertainment. Rather funny at moments, rather 'cheesy' at others. Soundtrack is good; lots of 80s music. 8.2 on IMDB is perhaps a little too much.

Watched 'Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief ' last night on Sky Arts.

Very interesting stuff; The celebs don't come out of it very well, never mind the 'religion'.

Also finally saw 'Steve Jobs' last week. Great performance from Michael Fassbender.

Having a bit of a clearout over the weekend and came across a handful of London premiere/press tickets for some movies from when I used to get to go to press screenings.

Iron Man 2, Amazing Spider-Man, Hateful 8, Captain America, Superman (the Brandon Routh one), Talladega Nights, maybe a few others that I can't remember now.

Some of them are pretty cool, so if anyone is a big movie buff and would like them let me know and I'll post them to you.

I watched three brilliant films last week:

    1. Guardians of the Galaxy: non-stop superhero, space action adventure. Great fun

    2. Pioneer: true story about the deep sea divers on a Norwegian/US programme to build the first oil pipeline along the sea floor to Norway. Cleverly filmed scenes in the hyperbaric chamber when the divers are training for their 300m+ dives. Tension and underhand political dealings and low key performances keep the film grounded in reality. Some of the divers on here might spot any inconsistencies but I was impressed. It got pretty bad reviews, saying it was muddy and sluggish, but I think they missed the point, with the whole point being the confusion of the diver trying to discover the truth.

    3. Gangs of New York: Scorsese epic about 3.5 hours long. Well worth spending a night in for. Daniel Day-Lewis turns in a superb performance as the chief psychopath.

New star trek film - totally mad, even more unbelievable but also the best use of a Beastie Boys song in a film ever ;)
