Also watched A Walk in the Woods (based on Bill Bryson's book) last night and whilst it isn't brilliant, I did enjoy it.

I thought it was great. The actors give a great performance.

Watched Kong Skull island today. Pretty good on the whole, fairly mindless stuff but fun watching monsters fight etc. John C Riley was also really good (as usual).

Just got back from seeing John Wick II. It certainly delivers what it sets out to, and if you thought the first one was a bit soft and light on gratuitous slaughter, you won't be disappointed wih this one. Nice to see some old fashioned stunt work - people falling down stairs, getting thrown out of windows, that sort of thing. The story is surprisingly coherent too.

On the watch-spotting front, some subtle but unmistakable product placement from Carl F. Bucherer - a couple of characters clearly wearing different models, including a Bond/Omega style glance at his watch from Ian McShane (sporting a Manero, apparently) as well as a couple of street scenes with billboards clearly visible.

Watched a few movies the weekend.

Miss Sloane, good movie about political lobbying in the US.

Hidden Figures, excellent history piece about coloured workers at NASA and the big part they played in the space program.

Hacksaw Ridge, what an awesome movie. Great story about a conscientious objector in WW2. The battle scenes on Okinawa are just scary.

Check out Hell and High Water, nicely paced, excellent script and great acting.

There was this one film in the boys room, dialogue was a bit thin though and the plot was predictable. Got there in the end though.

A very enjoyable movie. If our Olympic committee really did behave that way then shame on them. I came away from the movie with a lot more respect for Eddie Edwards that I gave him at the time.

    Finally watched I, Daniel Blake.

Two scenes really hit me. Superbly acted. We/I live in a bubble and don't realise just how bad some people have it.

Just watched War Dogs and really enjoyed it. A story based on true events in a similar mould to Wolf of Wall Street and Catch Me If You Can.

Just sat down and watched Hidden Figures, incredible story making for a top movie, even I had a tear in my eye.

After getting rid of the outlaws last night we watched Patriots Day, good movie and a lot more to the story than I knew at the time.

If you've got Netflix check out "Welcome to Leith"

Documentary about a white supremacist trying to take over a small town. Scarey stuff.

Young Offenders, a funny film on netflix about 2 young Irish lads and their search for money....

One of those films that doesn't really have anything to say, you shouldn't like the lads because of what they're doing, is hard to understand in parts, but I genuinely really enjoyed the film.

I've not seen it for ages but The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is on the box tonight. I have no real idea why I enjoy it but I like the way it's shot, love the soundtrack and it's an easy watch for a few hours.

Finally got around to watching Arrival, and thought it was brilliant.

Obviously there's a few plot holes and it's a little syrupy, but it's a big-budget movie that has to have mass appeal. I'd much rather we get intelligent sci-fi like this (and The Martian/Interstellar/Inception) than interminable Star Wars, Star Trek and superhero movies.

Yes, I'd agree, lots of similarities in the LA noir, transported into the 70s. On that note, was the dead guy under the tree RDJ?

    Gods of Egypt

I watched Gods of Egypt the other day. Absolute unmitigated garbage. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Everyone seemed to really give it a go, which was surprising given how ridiculous it was.

Arrival is one of those movies that divides opinion, all three of us thought it was dire. Daughter gave up after an hour and went to her room, wife gave up soon after and I switched it off with around 30 mins to go, the constant back and forth to the screen to speak with the visitors only reminded me of Groundhog day, but not in a good way. Now The Martian thats a top movie.

I can certainly see why it's not for everyone. I'm a sucker for "ideas" sci-fi, so really like the low-budget stuff (e.g. Primer, Coherence, The Sound of My Voice) where it's more about exploring the concept rather than a strong central story. Arrival is very similar to Contact and Close Encounters imo - another couple of films that some find quite slow.

I remember seeing the trailers for this and thinking it could be a 'so bad it's good' candidate. Should turn up on TV soon I expect.

    Ghost In The Shell

Starts of decently, but unfortunately degenerates into generic crap in the last 3rd. Doesn't hold a candle to the original, but, still the best live action anime to to date

Saw a 'netflix hidden gems' vid on youtube the other day, watched 2 of them on Fri night and really enjoyed both.

Moonrise Kingdom, quirky light hearted little thing, had never heard of it, but had a big cast, Ed Norton, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray and Harvey Keitel. The opening scout camp scene had me in stiches.

These Final Hours. Aussie film, 12 hours till the end of the world type thing. Pretty gruesome and brutal in parts, but saddly seemed the most realistic take on what would happen in thosr last few hours.

Saw that at a horror festival a few years ago and really liked it. Depressing and quite uplifting, too, in a way.

Saw 'Road Games' on the same day and it was good, too.
