This morning I watched "The Admirable Chrichton" on TV. The acting and characterisation is fantastic. Films this good aren't made today. It's from my year of birth, 1957.

A prisoner on death row story , but with a really good twist of course brilliantly acted and the pace is just right , see if you can see whats coming before the end !

Not a bad film this, great cast, and humour thrown in too, making this a cool Britflick.
I watched this yesterday and thought it was a really good film.

The main guy was perfect for the role.

I found the wannabe 'Plan B' bad guy a bit annoying.

Despite being a good film, with a bit more thought it could have truly been a great film, which was a bit frustrating at times.]

But thanks for the heads up.

Just watched the first episode of the film Longitude.

It's more like a documentary based on Dava Sobel's book about John Harison and his marine chronometer.

Whiplash and Birdman were last nights films.
Thought Whiplash was fantastic, J.K Simmons performance is something else.
Birdman wasn't for me I'm afraid.

    INHERENT VICE

I saw Joaquin Phoenix (and many others) in "Inherent Vice" on Thursday. I'm glad I read a couple reviews before seeing the film, because they prepared me for the garbled montage of scenes that take you through this dark comedy account of a billionaire's adbuction in 1970 that entangles post-hippie private investigator Phoenix. If you're willing to take the plunge into a film that you likely won't be able to follow very well (kinda like going through a Fun House), it pays off as a sweet and satisfying "trip." Three stars.

I second that, not a lot to the story, guys kill his dog, John Wick kills everybody, but the journey is fantastic

I watched Locke at the weekend, it's on Netflix. It's basically a guy in his car juggling personal life and work over the phone while driving a couple of hours to London. Not quite what I was expecting but it was actually a great film in my opinion. I could feel myself getting frustrated at some of the characters he talks to and sort of putting myself in his shoes, imagining how I would react. The idea sounds a bit dull but it really drew me in. Some of the shots were fantastic as well, great cinematography.

I totally agree with above, on paper not something that would be an easy sell to most but Tom Hardy pulls it off.

Extremely well shot, compelling & tense throughout & more than enough going on to draw you in 100%.It was one of my films of 2014 in fact, which if you'd said before watching "it's a bloke driving a car & talking" would have astounded me!

    The missus had me watch another French language film the other night, I see another tz-uker recommended it back in March;

    Untouchable (original title 'Intouchables').

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1675434/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Feel good film, François Cluzet / Omar Sy brilliant. If your stuck for something to watch with the missus and you can access Netflix Canada/Sweden/Denmark/Norway/Finland I recommend.

Agree! Surprisingly good and lots of cringe moments ala taken 1

    E.g

    Wick: where are they
Baddie: they are at xxxx and they know you are coming
    Wick: and it won't matter

Que music and tough walk off screen!

    Brilliant!

Also enjoyed recently the equaliser, American hustle and the edge of tomorrow (this is brilliant actually)

Eden Lake, it's not at all a nice film, but bloody brilliant.

Probably the best British thriller/horror film I've watched.

Free too watch on Amazon Prime. :)

I'm looking forward to this. I would have expected a Pynchon novel to be completely unfilmable.

Don Hemmingway, a odd film with Jude Law playing a just released from prison gangster out to collect his money.. I say odd as I can't work out if it's a good film or not, I think it is, I don't usually like Law but his character is unlike anything I've seen him play before...

    Watched J. C. Chandor's latest, A Most Violent Year. It's superb.

Such a talented director to have done Margin Call, All Is Lost and now this. No similarities between the types of films and all delivered excellently.

Anyone watched any good movies recently?

Kingsman: The Secret Service - preview last night, if you like Kick Ass style, Matthew Vaughan films then no complaints on this one, high on swearing, high on stylised (crazy) violence although in all honesty not as bad as I expected as most done in super fast/slow mo where you actually see very little, and a completely ridiculous script then you will love it, loved Colin Firth not so sure about the hammed up Samuel L Jackson but def two hours of fun and stupidity of James Bond on steroids!!!

Taken 3 - should have stopped with the first one, very poor.

Watched a few over the weekend, bit of a lazy one! :

Ex Machina - Superb thought provoking film. Really interesting concept and brilliantly put together.

A Theory of Everything - Was very good, especially the acting (got to win best actor for sure!!). Not all together sure I liked Stephen Hawking much or knew much more about him but good non the less. Ending made me a bit sad also.

Also caught Starship Troopers late Saturday night, I forgot how much I loved that movie and just how much fun it is! Shame the director (Paul Verhoeven) pissed off in 2000, he was responsible for some 80's/90's classics (Robocop, Total Recal and the brilliant Showgirls!!)

Weird Science - watched it with my teenage boys which was about the first time I watched it 30 years ago!! Still a great movie and I forgot how stunning Kellt Lebrock was back in the day!!!!!!!

Worth watching just to see the incredibly pert breasts on Dizzy Flores (actress Dina Meyer). Good film to veg out to.
Watched Sin City 2 and enjoyed it but I love these types of films. Bit sad that Brittany Murphy not able to be in it for an obvious reason. But Jessica Alba, Eva Green etc made up for it.

Another round of applause from me for Verhoeven's 'Starship Troopers'. Like the best of Verhoeven's work there's a lot of subversion going on it that film. Looking at it now it's as relevant as ever and it's difficult not to draw parallels bewteen the narrative and recent Western foreign policy. It's no accident that the uniforms worn by the high ranking officials look like Nazi uniforms. The good guys aren't really the good guys. Love it.
EDIT: Verhoeven's 2006 'Black Book' was absolutely awesome so check it out!

    THE ARTIST

Thought it might've been over-hyped with the Oscar wins and all that, but wow what a lovely lovely film!
