    The Place Beyond The Pines

Pretty good actually, with a couple of good unexpected turns along the way. I also like how it's a film of two halves.

    Call Me Lucky

Starts out as regular documentary about standup comedian, takes unexpected turn in the middle. Be warned, not the lightest of subjects, but well worth the watch

    Yes.
Intense, gritty - not at all Hollywood.

I saw The Martian last night. It's not a bad film, but I found it merely OK, Entertaining for a couple of hours, but it doesn't ask any questions of the viewer. It's like someone watched Gravity, and was inspired to make a mash up of Apollo 13 and Armageddon, without the love interest. It should have been called The Montage-ian, or perhaps Space MacGyver.

Oh, and it has that miserable skinny ginger woman from Interstellar and Zero Dark Thirty in it, playing a miserable skinny ginger woman.

'Nightcrawler' - great concept, very solid script, excellent performances (especially Gyllenhall, Rene Russo and Bill Paxton) and a wonderful last line. Loved every minute.

I watched The Lavender Hill Mob this morning. It is one of those films that I have always known would be boring and predictable. How wrong I was! The film was great, the cast brilliant and I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish.

One of my favourite films of last year. May just have to watch it again this afternoon.

Just got back from Sicario - a CIA black ops vs. Mexican drug cartel flick with Emily Blunt (English bint), Josh Brolin and a scary Benicio del Toro. Quite harrowing in places, but well made with some very effective scenes.

    Magnum Force.

Proper '70's cop thriller with Clint Eastwood and his very long (.44 mag of the title) gun.

Just watched the Norwegian film Hodejegerne (Headhunters), based on the book by Jo Nesbo. Strangely dark and worth watching if for no other reason than the presence of the lovely Synnove Macody Lund.

Watched Jurrasic World the other day - really good. You could basically watch Jurrasic Park and that and forget the others.

Went to see SPECTRE lastnight too - really good. A few good twists in there. Probably on a par with Skyfall - still not quite as good as Casino Royale.

Ditto that, brilliant film and one which was equal to the book on which it was based; which of course was based on actual real life events. Best film I have seen in ages.

Watched both Everest and The Martian recently and both great films.

The Martian I thought was the better of the 2, a very well thought out movie.

Love that film - I've had all 4 Dirty Harry movies on DVD for a couple of years, but never watched them (I've seen them all before, of course), but my wife's off on a jaunt for 10 days from Friday, so they will get watched then!

Is it Magnum Force or Dirty Harry where the .44 varies in barrel length from 6" to 8" in different scenes?

Watched Before Sunrise last night, this is a film I have heard a lot of hype about over the years but never (now its 20 years old!) got round to watching it. Very very good with a simple premise and extremely poignant. Certainly not an average chick flick.

I enjoyed that a lot on your recommendation, my thanks. I followed it up by re-watching "Tetris: From Russia with Love", the excellent and entertaining BBC documentary about the creation and subsequent wrangling over the rights to Tetris.

I recommend Into The White. It's a true WW2 story with British and German pilots in Norway.
