Well, that flies in the face of conventional interpretation, but hey - I'm sure you can persuade the entire WIS community given enough time, Michael ;)

    Why do you say that?.

Aged lume, doesnt automatically qualify as patina... It's aged lume.
Nor does a worn bezel... It's Wabi
Patina is something altogether different, and in some cases can be most delightful 8)

The photo in question is just of a watch with 'issues'

Patina isnt another word for issues, Tony

Well, this "watch with issues" has generated more PMs asking if I'll sell it than any other watch I've owned :P

Relax. It's a Rolex thing. If they want to misuse patina in the same way that 99% of people on forums misuse wabi sabi, it's fine by me. There's an "idiot" in WIS for a reason, you know.

Oh, I never said it wasn't nice, I'm only sticking up for myself :albino:

I think i've already made it clear in an earlier post that i'd love to own it as it's a grail of mine. 8)

Only thing is, I more than likely couldn't afford it.

Or could i?, you tell me

    Re: Patina?

Patina is commonly applied to things like metal, wood and leather, but according to Wikipedia at least, "figuratively, patina can refer to any fading, darkening or other signs of age, which are felt to be natural or unavoidable (or both)". This seems fair; however, the idea that patina can only be applied to watches that have tritium or radium lume (many don't) is illogical.

Also, watches themselves are made of a metal, so to any rational person, any watch should be able to show signs of patina if it's old enough. Thus patina might be a useful way to describe the darkening of old lume, but it certainly isn't the only definition.

Additionally, the "greening" of some surfaces due to oxidation (brass, bronze, copper) is considered patina. Fungal growth and spores from water damage and neglect do not fit any definition of patina. You may as well describe it as scrambled eggs.
...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!

No problem at all. I'm sure that some of my (rubbish) photos will be appearing on here somewhere next week, when I get it back.
Here you go. A rubbishy iPhone photo of my 'new' ExpII, post Genesis treatment:

Here's a photo of the same watch and bezel, pre-treatment. As you can see, the bezel was reasonably heavily scratched and lots of the black numbering was missing:

    Gotta love the open '6's & '9's. :love4:

That's oustanding, and thanks for posting the photos. Next stop for mine, Genesis watchmaking :)

Well, you got it wrong once, and I'm sure you'll get it wrong again ;)

    Really?

You post a thread containing some lovely photos of a lovely watch. And then, 2 weeks later, the watch is for sale on SC.

Which part of 'pre-SC thread' is wrong? :?:

Listen, I'll post a watch for sale whenever I choose to - what's it got to with you? Or are you suggesting that I sell every watch I post photographs of? If so have a look here and don't forget to season your words before you eat them: http://halfpastthehour.wordpress.com/here-now/

No, you're quite right. Let's ban the sale of any watches that have previously been photographed by the owner
