That is chuffing GORGEOUS!
I have been in Tokyo, and I went to Biccamera. I had seen it before in the web, but you never know. Sometimes pictures do not reflect the reality of the watch. Usually, it dissapoints when in the flesh. Not on this case. So 3400 euros later, I was the proud owner of this:
What is it? A modern reinterpretation of the Rolex Explorer. With a twist.
and another twist:
and on:
and on:
(btw, have you noticed the bad shock pictogram? :) )
The finish of the dial is gorgeous. And so hard to picture it!
Anyway.... here you have a few shots:
Btw (how many btws?), have you noticed the Grand Seiko logo in the display back?
Oh, well some more shots:
I know, I know, very pic-heavy. But in Spain we have a phrase: one image is worth more than one thousand words
That is chuffing GORGEOUS!
That's gorgeous.
When I joined here I just didn't get seiko at all.
I think I was wrong.
I'm really coming round to the GS offerings, and so far that is one of the nices I've seen. You must be made up.
I really like this, thanks for the write up. The dial macros really show the attention to detail, beautiful. I also like the image in the display back :)
Does it have an independently adjustable hour hand? Speaking of the hands I guess the fine black inlay is to improve legibility against the white dial under certain light conditions? Nice touch.
Stunning pics of a fantastic watch
Wow, some amazing finishing on that, lovely piece!
Gorgeous :drunken:
OUTSTANDING!
Your watch and pics are absolutely top shelf. Thanks so much for the BEAUTIFUL post. It's going to be a good day! :D
Very nice detailing and build quality. Classy.
Lovely! Been looking at these on Seiya but seems a lot cheaper to buy them in Japan. Another reason to try to go there!
That is really rather nice. The photos are excellent too. Thank you very much for posting.
Amazing pictures of a beautiful watch ! :) Congrats, it is stunning. The GSs are great watches, and something you don't see everyday
WOW! GS's just were not on my radar until this little beauty :o
Lovely watch, but can you explain to a philistine like me what the blue hand is for.
That is wonderful.
So that's a Dornbluth AND a Grand Seiko I somehow need to fit into my future watch collection.. hm... I best get saving!
That dial is quite astonishing. And, relative to some Swiss brands, it looks like really good value too.
Beautiful. Does this one have the spring drive movement?
Someone who lies about the little things will lie about the big things too.
The bezel itself makes the feeling of these two completely different..originally I thought that they share the same case but it seems not. Love your pix!
and one of my dream
Thanks for the post and the pictures - I particularly love the photo with the "ghost" logo on the display back. GS watches are beautifully put together and go completely unnoticed in the outside world and that's why I love them. Some of the more flashy ones with too many subdials / gadgets / power reserve indicators are a bit busy for me, but this one with very few obvious complications is very nice indeed.
By the way, I got mine throught the Seiko store in Amsterdam. Very helpful service from there and they love their Seiko watches. Far more pleasant than going to a big department store in London and a lot cheaper than flying to Japan to buy it.
Wow that's an absolutely beautiful watch - and so well photographed too. Lovely, thanks for showing us :)

Funny that. To me, they're one of the most attractive parts of the watch.Originally Posted by learningtofly

Lovely photos on my 22" monitor - shame the watch is only 1.5" wide in the flesh ;). Could do with some lume on the hands and indices to make it a proper Explorer alternative - few GSs have it for some reason.
...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!
.
I told this story here before but with the search malfunctioning I cannot find it …
I remember the first time I saw a GS (it was the black dial GMT) about 7-8 years ago, probably even longer. Something glistened to my eye from across a busy room, I wondered what it was, but soon forgot about it. Later on in the evening I was trying to squeeze between some people and chairs, and found my eyes within inches of this magnificent Seiko. I only had 2-3 seconds on it but I knew that I was looking at something different. Now I knew what the glistening was. It made me look at the wearer (I think he was Malaysian) in a different light. The rest is history.
I can fully understand the desire in WISdom for mechanicals tho own my heart lays with the SBGA011 ... but as far as the mechanicals are concerned, the GS GMT is most certainly the prettiest.
Wear it non-stop for next 6 months and gives us the lowdown.

THIN is the new BLACK
Oh.... my.... word!
I've only given Grand Seiko a cursory glance before, but this is stunning. I should think most of us here are extremely envious :D

'Traditional' Grand Seikos do not include lume as this is a component of the watch that will deteriorate over time. The idea was that your GS will last a lifetime, and look as good on your corpse as the day you bought it. OK, maybe that last bit isn't quite right.Originally Posted by andrew
The modern sporty 'nouveau' GS models have lume (and SD, and all sorts of new fangled gimmicky contraptions) but the classic GS models are still lume-free. As god intended.
Congratulations!
I always wondered how the white dial looks in real and now I know. Great photos.
Wow that is beautiful, very classy indeed.
That is somewhat attractive I must admit. Not too bad on price either.
Rolex don't bling like that. Swiss 'shiny' tends to be 'rounded'. GS shiny has a hard edge to it. Now we know Seiko use some sort of special technique ...Originally Posted by learningtofly

Fair point, but how will the wabi-sabi brigade get their coffee-colours kicks now? ;)Originally Posted by jason recliner

That is simply stunning... I love it !

Thanks for the comments, guys. I am really very happy with it and have worn it non stop for 10 days (now it is in the rotation cycle of the favourites).
Yes, the hour hand sets independently AND is also used to change the date.Originally Posted by Plake

Thanks Karl but you know that´s an overstatement. :wink:Originally Posted by Karl
I forgot to mention I was with a WISfriend on Saturday and he was ashtonished by the watch. He thought it was a Vacheron Constantin just for the finish of the dial....
Is the booklet tellIng you not to wear it to play golf?
I gotta say, that is a fine, fine thing indeed. I can feel an itch coming on.
In combination with the 24hr dial and the fact that the watch has "GMT" on the dial, it would be a second timezone.Originally Posted by alan2273

This is one outstanding piece!!! Congratulations, i miss biccamera :(
Dammit dammit dammit... Too small for my manly wrist! Lovely watch though. Really lovely watch. Every time someone takes detail shots of these Seikos it makes me want one more.Originally Posted by angeche

Now THAT is one FINE watch! Love those Grand Seiko's!
Stunning watch and photos and the finish and attention to detail is sublime! I can't wait to own my very own GS one day. Enjoy.
beautiful watch, the quality is indeed in the detail
Very nice indeed.
I think I need to look through the GS range in more detail.
Like the Spring Drive principle but prefer not to have the power reserve (or Spring Drive text) on the dial.
That auto just looks stunning.
