French Heuer Chrono - took the plunge

I asked a few questions here a couple of weeks ago about French Heuer chronographs, as the white dial versions really appealed to me. Anyway, on a whim a couple of weeks ago I bought one and it arrived today - thought I would share a few initial thoughts.

    Pic first of course....

Looks quite nice on one of Eddie's rally straps, though the lugs are 19mm so its a bit of a squeeze.

As others said it is not a big watch, but it looks a decent size on the wrist, probably because of the lack of bezel. The case doesn't seem to be of the highest quality, but the dial is very nice, very period. I believe these were late 70's watches, but looking at this one it has more of a mid-late 60s feel.

Pretty pleased with it at the moment, so will no doubt be my daily wearer for a few weeks, relegating another french Heuer, a 980 quartz diver, to the watchbox.

i don't usually like white dials or chrono's for that matter. But i do like that.
the case looks quite good in the photo, nicely brushed

Re: French Heuer Chrono - took the plunge

Its quite hard to explain what I mean about the relative lack of quality. Its not the finish of the case I meant, as it is quite smartly brushed, concentric with the dial on the top and vertically to the sides (from crystal to caseback).

It might be more the case design being quite slimline, but the case just feels a bit lower in quality than my Mark 2 speedmaster or a Monnin Heuer diver. The fit of the case back is not brilliant either, but other than that hard to put my finger on it. Probably just being overly picky! I like the watch anyway and it seems to be keeping decent time too which is a bonus....

    That looks very nice.
These can be difficult to pin down precisely, due to there being a few case options.. I've never seen a all White dialed version in a case like that, so it might have been recased, but bear in mind what I said above, i may be wrong. If it has been recased, this may explain any issue that you have with it.

Hi Stewart - thanks for your answers on my previous post, helped me decide to go for it!

Your mention of recased watches, and NOS part watches did put me on edge a bit, but I did a bit of research before I bought, and the all white dial was offered at some point - found one in one of the on the dash brochure scans you pointed me at:

    http://www.onthedash.com/Guide/_Catalog ... 29/p06.jpg

I'm pretty sure the case and dial (indeed all the parts of the watch) are contemporary - I've had a lot of older watches and they usually look this way - the look of having been around quite a while, not badly damaged but wearing the odd dink and scratch and general signs of having been used. The crystal is chipped in a couple of places, so will probably get that replaced at some point.

I'm wondering if the vertical brushing marks on the sides of the case make it look like its a die-cut part (is that the right terminology?) where it has been punched out. I know it hasn't but that is what it is reminiscent of!

Yeah, I did have a good look at the 1611 in the catalogue.. And I can't quite decide if that is exactly the same case that you have on yours. Sometimes these 'straight on' catalogue pictures are deceptive. Does the caseback have any markings?

    Hi Stewart

Yes it has "all stainless steel" curved around the top

"etanche 5 bars" across the middle with the serial number 79590 beneath it

then "antimagnetic" curved across the bottom.

    Mean anything you you?

You can't see so well from my one photo but looking at it front on its identical to the one in the catalogue.

Yeah, that sounds very familiar and how it should be.. So it would appear this is the 1611 case, apologises for casting doubt, it does look slightly different in your pic to that in the catalogue, I think it's just the angle. I wish these old catalogues had angled shots!!

Just checked pics of my old fume dial version..
    Similar caseback... http://heuerville.wordpress.com/2011...h-french-made/

Ps. I'm pleasantly surprised how elegant the case shape is, doesn't look much in the catalogue!

Not at all - I welcome the input. Always find it fun to learn something about a watch that is new to me, and I know you know your heuers - certainly much better than I do!

When I get a minute I'll do a front-on photo - just looked at my pic again and its funny how the case between the lugs looks so curved at that angle and pretty much straight front-on. quite deceptive

It's a lovely looking watch, congratulations.

When funds allow I'd love to go looking for an old Heuer chrono. I hope you enjoy the watch.

I've handled a few of these and that defo looks like a proper 1611 case, they do feel a bit thin compared to the 1589 case but that one is one piece and doesn't have the polished bezel.

Theres one pictured here http://www.watch-power.de/heuer_7765.jpg sorry couldn't get flicker working to upload the image direct.

I really like the look of that one.. Good catch (and maybe release into SC  ?)

I can see what you mean about it wearing larger than it looks. I've a couple with minimal bezel and it makes a big difference.

    Thanks for sharing.

Nice watch Rob, good to see it in the flesh the other day. I hope after buying a few seiko's off you I don't get to clear you out of Heuer's. Think my other half might have something to say about that.

Hi Simon good to see you on here at last!
No need to worry, as you well know have been thinking endlessly about heuers of one sort or another for the last couple of years - Now i've got one I like no danger of me moving this one (or the other 2 heuers I'm lucky to have) anytime soon...
