The mighty Grand Theft Auto III consumed months of my life in 2001. Awesome game.

It has to be Civilisation ("Just one more turn...!") although the various incarnations of GTA come a close second.

Zelda, ocarina of time. I payed it non stop for 3 months, forward, backward, all the side games.
I put it away swearing blind that I would not let consume me any more.
I eventually had to give it away, and made my mate promise not to give it back.

Memories of Double Dragon and Tron in the arcade, later on Streetfighter 2 on SNES, then Soldier of Fortune 2 online.
    Many hours wasted!

As a die hard gamer, I've had a lot of gaming obsessions over the years - but the one I've spent most time one, and enjoyed the most (and I'm surprised no-one's mentioned it), is UFO: Enemy Unknown

Many, MANY good hours spent playing it.

In recent years, Fallout 3 ate a lot of my life. I've spent a lof of time playing online multiplayer on Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3 as well.

A timeline of games i played incessantly would look like this

    elite
    sensible soccer
    syndicate
    civilisation (and the follow ups)
    championship manager
    gran turismo
    GTA 3 and Vice city
    dawn of war

    ZX81 : 3D Monster Maze (I loved this)
    Spectrum : Knightmare.
Arcade, Double Dragon, Pac Land, Gryzor
    PC : Quake II
SNES : Mario Kart. Super Bomber Man. 4 player mode was insane. Would often stay up for hours with friends on this.
    N64 : Mario 64

I stopped at this point, and have no idea what current games look like now.

Snap. I liked the fact you could pick up whips and so on. You could get a long way by just elbowing people too.

    Re: Most addictive video game?

I've played and loved many online FPS games starting with Return to Castle Wolfenstein (completely addictive and never bettered) through to Left for Dead - those zombie hoards really took some getting used.

But I think the most addictive are the football manager games, which are lethal. "I'll just play a couple more games and get to that cup tie" and before you know it it's two in the morning and your getting up for work at 6!

man alive! i can't believe i forgot all about that,an absolute gem of a game,if i had to pick one game as my all time favourite it's that one.i spent months on that building my bases up after graduating from the mighty 'laser squad' (i always had to restart the mission if corporal jonlan died )
there was another game that was based on the sas, even with an embassy siege, i think it was 'sabre squad'
i know i shouldn't ask but is there anything similar for ps3? i hope not else the mrs will string me up

    cheers,mick

I haven't played for years but Command and Conquer took up a lot of my time as a teenager. The only other strategy game that was as good was the Star Wars version. Sadly all the old versions do not work on Windows 7.

Baldur's Gate I & II for me. Could play them any time. Street Fighter Alpha series, Persona 3 & 4 and most obscure J-RPGs!

I never got into that one so much, but Mazogs was totally awesome:

    http://www.zx81stuff.org.uk/zx81/emulat ... tle=Mazogs

Still one of my all-time favourite games. Tip: don't press the space key in that emulator or it will bomb, stick to letters and numbers and it's OK. For those who don't know: get the treasure and get out of the maze, avoiding the monsters. If you must fight a monster, a sword helps. Simple.

Operation Wolf on the arcade :

When you successfully finished the first mission liberating all 10 hostages a new mission started (same screens but faster)...when you finished that mission successfully the game just stalled....

Recent years its been the COD series and any RPG from Bethesda, but all time it would be the Champ manager series. Banned myself from them in 2003 after over 12 hours stuck at the PC saying "one more game"

All time favourite arcade game - the original Sega Rally. Got pretty good at it as well, could regularly get the No.1 spot on the timesheets.

As for games consoles -Commodore 64 Spy Hunter, Spy vs Spy series, Pitstop and Tapper. Sega Megadrive Sonic and Herzog Zwei. Xbox 360 HALO, Forza, Gotham and Gears of War series.

Online gaming has stolen whole chunks of my life

Anyone remember 'The Way Of The Exploding Fist' on the Spectrum ?

Was the early 80's precursor to Street Fighter, but in 2D and with 6 different moves.
    I loved it.

I also remember being about 7 years old and completing Bruce Lee on the Spectrums set up in John Menzies in Poole Arndale Centre :)

Mario cart on the N64, been playing it for for over 15 years now and still love it. Of course you need an import console to play or it plays in slow motion.

Street fighter was always 2D until recently, I find the 3D ones really dull and inaccurate.
