Thread: Desk clocks - any that aren't tat ?

Desk clocks - any that aren't tat ?

Looking for a simple desk clock. No radio control, alarm, weather report or carriage-clock impressions necessary, just time. Digital or analog. No onyx. All the ones I can find are silver-coloured plastic tat. Does anyone make a nice simple desk clock anymore ?

    Hi,

I understand your problem; I think.
I'm very happy with this Seiko Worldtimer I found at a fleamarket in our local sportscentre for silly money.
After dusting it off and putting in a new battery it has since functioned flawlessly.
Maybe this is something for your desk if you stumble across one; here are some fast and terrible pics:

    Good luck on your quest!

Or how about a nice JLC, either modern or vintage, Paul? there are some gorgeous ones about.

I picked this one up recently. Basically a Memovox in desk clock form

That Seiko and the JLC look about one million times better than the usual silvery plastic things. Why do people buy those . I think I've seen the Seiko one on EBay. Anyone still making nice new ones though, before I slip into the dusty world of used ?

I have a couple of these put away for Christmas already.
Search e-bay for magnifier pocket watch.
The top glass cover folds over to use a stand - similar to a travel clock.

The viewable dial is only 35mm.
and the movements are what you would expect from a £10 watch.
A redial and new hands can double or treble the price using parts from Getat or Manbushijie.
The gold is complete (£20), the silver Pam is still in kit form (£25)

    This is a better picture.
If you can trust the office cleaners, I would be looking at a vintage pocket watch on a display stand.
If you can't trust the office security - A full size version of this would do the job for £4.50p untill you find something better.

Baume and Mercier seem to make a couple of nice looking ones, Hampton and Clarisma.

I use this... think I paid less than £20 from ebay a while ago. Loses 2-3 mins a day and no longer lasts 8 days fully wound - may get it serviced at some point...

I like the idea of using a nice pocket watch in a stand as a desk clock, but I would probably forget to wind it too often :bounce:

Have a look at soviet era tank/aircraft panel clocks. There are various ready made stands available for those too.
These come in up to eight day versions and there are even temperature ´compensated´ (heated) ones.
Imo those are thé 8) desk top clocks.

Yes, and then there is the soviet moon-watch. Although rather more rare these do appear on ebay.

    At the moment there is a special ops bomb timer with the moon-caliber for sale;

Bit of plodding through the interwebs and it seems the Mondaine is made in China, which on the whole wouldn't bother me but for the fact this is supposed be THE Swiss clock

Looks like used is the way to go. Nice JAL clock that, there must be some of those round these parts ...

I wanted one of these for years:
    http://www.russia2all.com/russian-wa...mig-clock.html

...or how about a flip clock and radio? I have one from a local antiques shop, very stylish (and has a light if you like sitting in the dark). Mine is not entirely quiet though, you can hear it run when everything is quiet.

I like the look of the flip clocks. Too bad the nicer looking ones are still quite expensive (the modern "retro design" models, mostly).

I have been looking a bit at something like this, but maybe that is a bit to special... Just love the idea of it, and it can be obtained at a very reasonable price... (and no, I'm not the seller :D )

The search is just for "cockpit clock"...

Are you willing to go vintage digital.

    1977 Heuer desk clocks !
They were made of aluminium , available in 2 shapes and 2 colours - here's the complete set !

    And my favourite pair

Bit of DIY comes in handy ;)

I recently bought this late 1960s Relide desk clock from the States:

It has a jewelled (15 or 17 jewels, can't remember which number is correct) Swiss autowind movement; every 45-60 minutes, you can hear a high pitched whirring for a couple of seconds as it winds itself.

Love the orange glow of those Heuer desk clocks. I have a (rather cheaper) LED alarm clock that's similar. I must use that.

In my case to be honest a desk clock is a bit redundant. The panel at the bottom of my Linux desktop has a clock that's always accurate to a fraction of a second, and I never spend time at the desk unless I'm using the PC.

    Hi,

I am wondering why I still have this standing in my attic since I don't have a desk for it or any place else to show it off.
Should it stay there or should I move it to SC?
Any sane answers would be appreciated...

You could buy the Sinn NaBo clock, a genuine instument clock which can be fitted to an aircraft but would also look good on a desk. However, £2k is a bit steep for a desk clock!

I've got an art deco smiths electric clock on the window sill. It wasn't working so I removed the movement and added a Junghans quartz movement. Might look good on the right desk?

Thanks for introducing me to this, I missed your one on SC but just won one on eBay for £55 or so. Even better, SWMBO has bought it for my birthday. I'm a very happy bunny.
