Explorer 2, Direct comparison with photos.

I was in brentford cross today and noticed a lovely selection of Rolex sports on stock including the explorer 2 42mm white and black dial, and a 40mm black dial version. I was wearing my white dial 40mm so off I went!

Jut compared the white dials on the wrist and in photos.

The larger watch wears well and doesn't feel as cartoon like as it looks in the brochure. The hands are too big though and on the black dial version the blaked out centre is so obvious I'm not sure why they bothered.

The clasp on the new one doesnt have the glide lock of the sub, but is a great addition.

The whole thing feels chunkier and wears higher on the wrist as its much thicker.

Some really nasty iPhone pics from the shop.

Only one choice there for me and it's not the new one.

Quite, everything about it from the squareness of the case, to the size of the plots, to the thickness of the hands, is, IMO a retrograde step. But ultimately, all that will matter is how many of the things they sell, and it's way too early to get clear picture of that.

This post by ASW1 in a previous thread about 40mm vs 42mm ExpII sums it up best for me:

The new Explorer II is one of my favourite watches ever. It really is that good.

It didn't feel over size in the wrist, and even when I took that shot of the two together and we were looking tvitbon the table the shot on camera really showed the difference up more than the naked eye.

The black dial version has made a bit of a dogs dinner of the hour and minute hands IMHO, less Lume because of the black paint at the bottom.

It's strange, but to be honest on the wrist it felt ok. It cirtainly did not feel 1200 quid different though. The old one they had in the window also brand new of course was 4350 the new 5550.

Do the staff in the shop look at you in a strange way when you were taking the pics??

I have to join the crown and say I prefer the old one. The orange GMT-hand is the only improvement on the new model.

The lume isn't all that bad on the black one.
The black edging on he hour markers on the white ones makes the lume looking smaller than the black one....

Not to mention the solid end links, solid centre links and the easy link clasp.

New one looks much better on you than the old one.

I like the new Exp 2, but I would go for the black dial personally - white dials wear a bit bigger if you haven't got massive wrists.

New one looks better to me, I have not seen one in the flesh but from those pics looks like the watch has received a nice boost.

Whenever I have handled the older style it's always felt a tad flimsy. :?

What a downgrade in overall looks! Like the previous version much more.

And a 17,5% price increase? No, definitely not. Although it's good for the residual value of the Mk 1.

Agreed, I much prefer the first too.

The ceramic GMT is pretty sexy though.

I'm sort of coming round to the new one's dial but the hideous hands are a deal breaker.

If you see them side by side they do look different. Not sure if I have a preference. :)

I have the new one (white dial) and am loving it. Agree with the original post it wears higher on the wrist than the old one as it is much thicker took me a little while to get used to that but no complaints.

I have the old model with a black dial, not sure that the new one looks any better or worse, both look good. The 42mm now gives me a reason to buy a white dial one as well.

Both the new and old Exp IIs are great IMO. The old white face and the new black face for me. Yes, there really is quite a stark size difference but they both look right to me. Also the squarer case on this hasn't struck me as it did on the Sub c for example. Maybe I need to take another look..or maybe it's the bezel being the same colour as the bracelet that masks it a bit.

Not in this case for me. While generally preferring the previous cases on the Sub and GMT, this is IMHO the best "upgrade" Rolex have released. Like the old model, the black dial does little for me but the contrast of the white dial with the hands, plots etc. is very nicely done.

Looks like they asked a 5 year old to look at the 40mm and then draw it from memory. Cartoonish and a retrograde step IMHO.
