Hi Guys,
Still very new to the forum posting wise but have been following the chatter for a while now. Due to an unfortunate theft I am no longer in possession of my beloved ND Sub. As it wasn't insured and due to other more pressing financial commitments right now I'm not in a position to replace it like for like. Having had the Sub, albeit for a few months, I have acquired a taste for divers and need something a bit bigger than my bi-metal Omega Constellation which has been with me for the past 6 years, worn daily.
Does anyone have any suggestions for under c.500GBP? I have considered a Steinhart but I am not overly keen on them being so similar to the Sub itself. I think I would rather keep with the diver styling but have something which is a little bit different in some way as opposed to being a true replica. Also, size wise, it has to be atleast 40mm as I am in the mood for something a little more substantial than the Constellation.
Any and all suggestions are gratfully received!

Just my 2pth:
OWC milsub (I have seen a couple on here lately and they look fantastic with the ceramic bezel)
Steinhart Vintage Red (The build quility is very good for the money they cost, well worth a look IMO)
Good luck in your hunt!
Eddies new PRS 18A or Q has to be the best VFM watch currently available.

Oris has been mentioned but here's one that I like a lot and may fit the bill for you.

It's a divers style watch and is definitely not taking it's design cues from anywhere else. I love the inwardly sloping case sides and bullet shaped hour markers. Oris watches are very good quality and reasonably priced. You might be able to get a new one for £700 or £800 (list price is around £1000 I think). A pre-owned owned one should be well within your £500 limit.
Halios Laguna
Gray
My Kemmner Turtle has rarely been off my wrist since I bought it. And you will be more than £200 under budget.
I just had a look and it seems like the Oris Divers Date is more like £600 to £700 used. Worth it though!Originally Posted by andymac66

I'd have a serious look at the various boutique brands such as Benarus,Helston,Boschett etc. I recently bought a Benarus sea devil and have been very impressed with the Watch, packaging and the customer service. I sent several emails to Benarus and they were all answered pretty much immediately by Steve. Most of these are made in limited runs of maybe 50-100 so your getting something that your not going to see on someone else's wrist and in my own personal experience,The customer service and loyalty is second to none

Many nice suggestions. However, if you previously looked in the direction of Steinhart, You could take another look. They also have their Triton line of diver's watches. Quite nice and substantial, if you ask me.
You could also try out a Christopher Ward.
Nice hunting.
Have a look at the Helson stuff - was most impressed by the skin diver. You can often pick up a Longines or Oris used diver for thast price. Eddie has some great offerings, you could almost get a PRS18 (PRS93 on the TF site) and Speedbird III for £500. Or consider the bullet proof PRS3 as a diver with bracelet.

Amazing value for money, beautifully designed and constructed watch. Mine arrived properly adjusted and running at +1-2 spd.
Comes with a genuine isofrane rubber strap and metal bracelet but IMO is perfect with a vintage ish brown leather strap too.
Picture from internets as I havent got round to taking any of mine yet.
I would have a look at the Glycine Combat Sub Auto on SC at the moment. They are fantastic, good looking watches and this one is on at a great price. Really surprised it hasn't been snapped up yet. Here's the link:

I haven't had a Halios Laguna and so can't comment on it, but from what I have seen on this thread it seems worth checking out. For under £500 I would recommend you look at a Seiko Sumo, (for example the SBDC001 with a black dial), or a secondhand Stowa Seatime. You should be able to pick a secondhand Sumo up for around £275 - £300 and a Seatime for £450-£500. I have both and think they are both exceptional watches for the money.
Another for Christopher Ward. They have a nice line in Diving watches that you can buy new and still have change. http://www.christopherward.co.uk/men/di ... -dive.htmlOriginally Posted by helledi
And Seiko are an obvious choice with a Monster available for a fraction of what you have to spend. There is a black Monster on SC at the moment for less than £100.
Have a look at Deep Blue, a lot of a watch for the money

Halios make fairly limited runs of their watches and this one pops in and out of stock - the grey and bicolour bezels are all gone - but actually my favourite was always the black :)
Just to labour the point that that isn't my depilated limb here is a quick iPhone 4s photo of my actual Laguna with a fudge Toshi on it.
Thanks Rich for the excellent strap by the way - I'll get round to taking some proper photos when I eventually do a mini review of the watch and I'll be delighted if you chose to use them in your gallery :)

Just under the £500 mark
Thanks everyone for the brilliant suggestions. I am a little shy on the post-count front so can't see the SC yet but will definitely take a look when I can. Only interested in automatics/manuals to be honest. New or used doesn't matter to me as long as it is in reasonable condition. It's going to take me a while to work through all the suggestions that's for sure though! Thanks again everyone.
Steinhart has an original design coming in feb. Ocean 2.
Seiko's are always great and enough models.
I had a short email exchange with Gunther. I asked if there would be a 'public' version of the Black Sea. He responded that he knew that there had been a lot of buzz regarding this exact model and I just had to be patient until the Ocean 2 arrived.Originally Posted by Glen Goyne

Another vote for Oris from me. Bought a lovely titanium diver from SC not long ago. Not left my wrist since.
I'd vote for either an Oris or a Seiko Sumo.....
I might know that one... :wink:Originally Posted by Mutling

PRS-3 ;-)
Hardly been off my wrist since getting it almost a year ago.
Also the watch I get most compliments on.

Our host's PRS-18 or PRS-14 are among the best choices you can make at this price range. Or a Seiko Sumo, a classic choice, with the great 6R-15 movement.
What about a Benarus Remora? I bought one of the first batch from Steve with a ceramic bezel, and recently one with a sapphire bezel for my dad, excellent watch and Steve is a very helpful guy!
I agree that there's no better value for money than this or the '14.Originally Posted by trisdg
PRS 14 would be my choice, hard to find a better looking watch at your pricepoint
Others I've had that all fall into this category
Deep Blue - loads of models to choose from, had 2 and both were great value for money
Glycine Lagunare - should find a used one for just under your budget, warning these are big at 46mm
Tissot Seastar 1000 - great watch
Sumo - sold my black one still got the orange one and no plans to sell.
For that budget I'd get a Seiko Sumo or an used Stowa Seatime. Or maybe a Halios Laguna, those look awesome.
PRS-3 has already been mentioned, but I'll mention it again. I think it's one of Eddie's very best, and makes for a great package:
