Advice required ref Seiko chiming clock

Just acquired this Seiko quartz clock and the chime and strike work when tested ie when the AM and PM buttons are pressed. However, I cannot make the chime and strike work on the quarters and hour when the movement is running- they seem to be turned off but I cannot find any on/off switch . The only controls on the movement are (from the top, clockwise) : switch between Whittington and Westminster chimes, AM & PM buttons , Start and Stop switch (which zeros the seconds hand and stops the clock) , hands turn button, and volume.

Movement caliber is QF144S but I cannot find any references to it on the net.

I have searched the net for Seiko quartz chiming clock instructions but none traced so far explain how to switch on the chime and strike .

Pressing (beeping) the AM or PM buttons 'X' times makes the strike sound 'X' times. Switching the chime works on test - but the clock is silent when the movement is operating.

I suspect that maybe the AM & PM buttons might need pressing in a certain sequence to activate the chime and strike on the hours and quarters??

    Any assistance would be appreciated.

It's a very nice clock - well made and a good weight - and I'd like to hear it chime.

    Thanks

You may have seen these already Dunk but I found these instructions, not for your particular clock but for a quartz Seiko Westminster/Whittington chime clock:

    http://www.grandfatherclocks123.com/sei ... anual.html

The interesting paragraph I've pasted below. Apparently there can be a 90 minute delay before the chimes kick in.

If your chime doesn't count the correct hour:
    1) Take out the battery
    2) Set the time to 5:50 AM
    3) Replace the battery in the cavity.
    4) Set the time with the hands moving clockwise to the correct time.
    5) The chime will sync correctly and play the quarter hour chimes after the clock has been running 90 minutes.

Oh!! I had seen the 5.50AM instruction but not seen anything about the 90 minute delay. Just reset the time after setting it to 5.50AM. Now the 90 minute wait ... but as it is 00.39 hrs, presumably will have to wait until 05.45 hrs to hear the chime.

    Thanks very much.

    Best wishes

The clock 'clicked' at 20 seconds before 01.00 which is a good sign but it should be in night mode now so chime and strike will be silent until 05.45.

Unfortunately the clock is still not striking or chiming when the movement is going - but it does respond to a 'test' chime and strike ie when the chime is switched from Whittington to Westminster and when the AM or PM is pressed several times. There must be a combination that resets the chime and strike to work on the quarter and hour.

Yes it is frustrating. However, there must be a way - and the initial time setting @ 5.50 seems to be standard for several Seiko chime models . I will draw up a matrix with various combinations ie battery out, battery in, clock motor off, clock motor on, and try them all. The problem is that after setting, I have to wait 90 minutes to see if any of them work - the waiting is the frustrating part.

The clock is a real 'beaut' - 8" x 6" x 3.5" - a similar Seiko would be quite expensive to buy new. I found it in a charity shop yesterday.

    Best wishes

Re: Advice required ref Seiko chiming clock

    Just found this:

To set this clock, turn the time adjust wheel on the back to set the time of day.
To sync the chimes to the proper hour, press either the AM or PM button the number of times+1 of the hour displayed on the front dial.
(if time is 8:20pm, press the PM button 9 times.)
It will sync the next time the minute hand passes the top of the hour. However do not try this if the minute hand is between 45min past the hour and top of the hour. After the first sync the quarter hour chimes will sound.
This clock will silence the chimes late at night, hence the reason for the AM/PM button
    s.

... maybe it will sync the chimes.

    http://en.allexperts.com/q/Clocks-Watch ... Quartz.htm

Will try this if the previous 'fix' does not sync and work after 90 minutes

Given up with the 05.50 method.

Still trying and feeling perplexed. Tomorrow I will buy a new battery as the seconds hand is not in sync with my radio controlled clock ie 20 seconds lost in a few hours.
