Hey folks,
So, I'm trying to be a bit less scruffy. I'm an IT consultant (which forgives most of my fashion blunders as people just think 'he's a geek, 'nuff said') and I normally wear an open necked shirt with chino type things and maybe a blazer to customer sites. I wear these with smartish Chelsea boots (such as the Anatomic & Co ones).
I'm thinking of getting some suits (plain dark grey or maybe a stripe) to wear with an open necked shirt but I'm toiling a bit with shoes. I really don't like shoes that are very low cut - and indeed usually prefer to have my ankles covered - must have some psychological demons!! - but I'm not sure if it's ever really okay to wear boots with suits - despite the expression 'suited an booted'.
I really like the look of brogue boots (like Grenson 'Fred' boots) but I've no idea about whether they are 'on'. As such, I'd appreciate any sartorial tips from people who really know how these things work.

Chelsea boots with a suit look great if the trousers are very narrow cut, just think of John Steed in The Avengers - it does't get much more stylish than that.

Boots are cool with a suit. Just don't get ones with wide tops, so you can tell with a quick glance. Getting your trousers caught in the top of your boots is worse than a bird tucking her skirt in her buckets.
If you get as cool as me, you too could wear boots with your trousers tucked into your socks 8)

I pretty much only wear Chelsea boots with suits. Looks fine as far as I'm concerned.
I've had a quick look at the Fred boots; don't particularly like them and I think they'd look terrible with a suit.
I sometimes do that on my motorbike. I find it oddly comforting (until it rains and I wished I'd put my trousers outside my boots).
Anyway, I'm warming to this boot and suit thing. :D

Absolutely - I don't think the no brown in town rule holds any more, although I'd draw the line at brogues.

I've always worn boots with trousers.I don't even own a pair of shoes and until rencently hardly wore trousers either being an installer. Now I'm in the office I wear trousers with boots.

I'd give that look at couple of years to pass before wearing that. It's "in" now. With skinny trousers and thin cardigans with shawl necklines. *shudder*

as for the OP's 'dilema' :? .....just buy some decent shoes. Don`t wear brown shoes with black, blue or grey suit.....it never works.
ALWAYS take a minute each morning to give your shoes a quick polish; scruffy/dirty shoes looks slovenly. a quick wipe over helps a lot. Even though I no longer work I still do this, can`t stand wearing dirty shoes.

Wore my chelseas on new years eve with Homer simpson looking out over the top of them, socks a christmas prezzie from an autistic child I work with.
Why not? I don't really wear shoes, I have proper formal boots to wear with my suits and I'm not convinced anyone has ever noticed the difference.

I only have boots and never buy shoes but try and cover all bases colour wise,style etc and some go with suits and others don't.

I do but making sure you are not looking a muppet with trousers caught in boots can become obsessive.

Spot on. A suit can look very good with Chelsea Boots (as long as you avoid the aforementioned trouser/back of boot interface). I'd avoid brown though.

I'm sometimes wearing my EG shannons with a suit, but I'm not sure about the chukkas or brogues boots with a suit (you can all prove me wrong with pictures :))
These might be suitable with one of your tweed suits (although ideally with breeks rather than trousers)
At a push, these with a suit (but not if you are discussing matters of trustworthiness)
As to wearing brown shoes with a blue or grey suit : not a problem if you are an on-course bookmaker. Or French. Otherwise no.

If you are trying to impress senior management, regardless of what's in fashion or what the masses think is acceptable, you can't beat a dark suit and black leather shoes. No comedy ties or cuff links. I think you can get away with black leather lace-up ankle boots because they look like shoes under a trouser leg.
If you are not looking to impress senior management then just wear what you want.
Despite all the Chelsea Boot fans on here, this is the only situation where I'd consider wearing boots with a suit was, ahem, suitable:

I don't have any management to impress though I do want to be considered trustworthy by my clients. I'm not French or an on-course bookmaker. As such, the answer seems to be black Chelsea boots with narrow trousers. With this, I look forward to achieving a level of sartorial style not seen since (or even during) my wedding!! And the ankles stay covered :)
