Wear it and enjoy it.
hi all
My vintage Omega's just come back from an expensive service and for the first time I'm almost scared to wear it.
I used to wear it daily but now its been cleaned up it looks to good to wear it and I'm scared to scratch it.
Does anyone else have this problem ?
If I simply store it and wear a cheap daily beater does anyone have any advice on storage?
Does it harm mechanical watches to be stored flat, not on a winder?
Presumably the automatic mechanism requires movement to keep it in prime condition?
thanks for any thoughts/advice in advance
Ed
Wear it and enjoy it.
Wear it.
You won't enjoy it if it's in the safe.
Its a watch not a museum piece, wear it and enjoy it, love to see some pictures. Vintage pieces that have lasted this long are testimony to their toughness, you did not have any fears before just enjoy it all watches are going to show some wear - as it should be.
Give it an outing on high days and holidays...you will be really pi$$ed if you mark it
Perfect excuse to buy another watch
Wear it but be sensible. Don't wear it when doing chores involving: hammers, paint or power tools. And show us some pics!
Like he just said ;-)
Worse comes to worst, you can have it touched up in a few years time again.
Flip it & buy a G-Shock.
Never really got the 'too good to wear' thing with watches?
Almost like the car that is never driven - why have it?
Watches are for wearing and enjoying - IMHO of course
When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you.........
Buy a Damasko.

I'm not an very expensive watch man myself, the most expensive I own is probably worth 4-500 quid. Might not apply to you and to so many out there with collections stretching into hundreds or even 1000's , but my principle is that if I'm not wearing it or if it's not suitable to wear on a regular basis, then why buy it in the first place ? If I want to just admire then, why not pass by the watch shop daily, look at it and save the dent in my wallet.
Youtube
wear it carefully , you can always have it serviced again...mind you, ive flipped watches becuase ive thought that they were 'too nice to wear'
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
Life's too short to keep a nice watch locked in a safe!!
Wear it carefully in rotation with other watches, and it should stay in good shape for years :)
Wear it and enjoy it , otherwise it's a bit silly owning it. Ok if your going to go digging holes in fields then maybe leave it at home, but if that isn't the case then wear it and don't worry so much.
Wear it respectfully, so wear it, enjoy it, but pair it with something better suited to taking a knock or two when needed.
Also, look at it from a different perspective - you've just proven that you can send your watch away with knocks and scraps and have it come back like new. So wear it and if it does get marked, do the same again.
I'd either wear it, or sell it and get something else. As an aside,
You're more likely to wear it out on a winder. I'd just stick it in a box if you're that worried about it and try to wear it at least once in a while.Does it harm mechanical watches to be stored flat, not on a winder?
Presumably the automatic mechanism requires movement to keep it in prime condition?
No such thing as too good to wear as far as I'm concerned. Watches are for wearing. Wear it and enjoy it.
regards,
Nick
As has been said, just wear the thing. I think you'll get a lot more enjoyment from it on your wrist than having it sitting in a safe somewhere you can't see it.
Thanks everyone for your advice,v helpful.
Will def partner with a beater for those rare days in the mine shaft The rest of the time I will wear it.
But how long can automAtic mechhanical watches be left off the wrist without the mecahanism being
Detrimentally affected ? Presumably they require regular movement/ excercise ?
sell it to someone who will wear it and go buy one of these......

get it on and stop worrying
Any chance of some pics?
I'm firmly in the "wear it" camp
What's the worst that can happen? Ultimately it might end up looking like it did before the service, in which case just send it off again
Unless you're planning on not wearing it for years, I wouldn't worry about it. Ultimately, lubricants can deteriorate and dry out, but like anything mechanical, watches don't actually benefit from running constantly.Originally Posted by eddie1
Its only a watch right? Wear it and enjoy the most out of it... As mentioned before, life is too short.
If you don't wear it you'll end up selling it!

Made to be worn :D
It depends on what gives you the most pleasure - for it to be on your wrist but with you anxious or on display for all to admire, ie mostly you and your poor other half.
I'm a collector and I've got a dozen watches so far and they each only get on my wrist once a fortnight, but I pass by the display cases every day and enjoy gazing at them, so they don't have to be only on your wrist or on ebay.
Oh and life is sooo long, don't believe the hype.
I think you get the message by now, but if you don't wear it then what is the point of having it? (Investment reasons aside)
Wear in rotation and above all, enjoy it :)
As has been said, wear it in weekly rotation with other watches. That way you reduce the risk of damaging it and you get to look forward to the weeks when you do wear it.
thanks again everyone
Yep wear it and enjoy it :P
Definately wear it on rotation if necessary.
Watches are meant to be worn in my opinion
That's the approach to take! :DOriginally Posted by SlimJim16v
Wear it and enjoy.
I have a couple of gold watches I had similar worries about, as the cases are soft.
Ignored the worries though and a few years later, watches look exactly the same.

You've got to wear it. What's the point in having a wrist-watch if it doesn't spend time on your....well, you get my drift.
Bit like having a fabulous car and trailering it to shows, never driving it. To be honest I'd like to be in that sort of position, but why would you love a watch so much, but then never wear the thing?
Wear and enjoy it. Each time you look at it you'll smile. :)
