Christmas2013bokeh by Neil Haughey, on Flickr

Its been to long coming but I took this just before Christmas using I think the 3rd roll out of the first 4 rolls of film I have shot since the 80's. The lens is the legendary Zeiss ZM Sonnar 50 f1.5, shot at f1.5 on my Leica M6. Film is Ilford XP2 shot at 800 ISO and developed as normal C41.

I can't for the life of me recall what Mrs NJH was watching on the telly that was so funny but it kept her laughing enough for me to grab this shot.

I like your shot...but, as to the crop, we'd need to see what it came from to offer up suggestions. At the moment, my eye is led to the left where there's not a lot to see and away from the detail that's in focus. But, everyone will see something different...there's no right or wrong, IMHO.

    Thanks for posting...

    Cheers for the comments guys..

this is the un-cropped version.. 2 things I was struggling with on the crop..

1, how much of the leading post should I include.
2, how much of the right side of the picture to exclude..

    thanks again..

I can see where you're coming from. As I posted, we all like things a little different. The best I could come up with was to lose the leading post altogether and crop it square. This meant taking a little off of the bottom, but keeping the interesting squiggle of the joint. Then the light diagonal structure is a bit more dominant...some will find that OK, I hope. If you've got something that appeals to your eye, then I think you've done the best you can with it.

So...not much help from me! Sorry...

I like it. Nice to see some colour in a metal fence, they all seem to be drab around my area. Re cropping this shot, for my eye, I would crop down to the top of the out of focus post on the extreme left, leaving your nicely focussed post head approx 1/3rd down and central. This narrow band of focus leads me nicely from the bottom of the shot up to your main point of focus. Also you keep as much out of focus detail as possible in the shot. All very subjective of course.

    Very moody C-B!

My long awaited Contax Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.7 arrived today, going to take a bit of getting used to, but very happy with initial experiments...

The Contax/Yashika lenses work perfectly, (achieving infinity focus) via a suitable adaptor onto Canon EOS - the adaptor I have is chipped for focus confirmation cost less than a tenner. Bokeh is great through the wider apertures!

I took some pictures of my daughter in the garden earlier and when I saw this one I thought it might belong in here. Not done anything at all to the photo yet (though I did pre-emptively remove a load of bogeys from the subject before I started snapping!

That's bokeh alright, subject and background nicely separated. What a beautiful subject too! Lovely shot.

(I had the camera out of the bag anyhow for the solar eclipse)

Hopefully good enough to resurrect this thread

Please excuse the ill-thought out borders and stupidly pretentious text. Also, are we limiting it to bokeh light artifacts or are we including general shallow DoF shots?
