Hello and welcome to the forum! :D
Apology in advance for possibly a dumb question. I'm new here, and not seasoned in the terminology.
Can anyone advise if it's possible to accurately work out the year of manufacture of an old Omega Speedmaster Professional please?

Essentially all Omegas are dated by their movement number, obviously you'll need access the movement to find this. Once that's done here's a list of movement numbers with corresponding years.
Although this is a good system and extremely useful it's not infallible or 100% accurate. Some Omegas are unfortunately put togethers or frankenwatches especially the more iconic models. For example a vintage SM300 may well have a cal.565 from a much less valuable model like a Geneve. If your movement has a R next to the number it means it's a service replacement movement (thanks to JonW for that snippet of info). Plus from what I can gather Omega produce(d) movements in batches, so a what may have been manufactured in say 1978 but might well have sat in a dealers for a year or so before being sold.
HTH and welcome to the forum.
Cheers,
Gary
Lovely, thanks for your advice. I'm specifically looking for '71 (birth year) so now I've got a guide to help me on my journey.
Thank-you, David
hi david, welcome to the forum :albino:
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
Hello and welcome to you
Hi all, thanks it seems like a friendly kind of walled-garden here.
This production-dating malarky is a similar quest I have with photography lenses.
Some manufacturers are easy to accurately pinpoint your example, whereas others are an absolute 'mare, and even with an etched serial number you can never be sure.
One difference between watches and lenses though being potential fakery which does concern me.
I'd be gutted to invest more than I can really afford and buy a lemon.
Omega is always going to be a bit hot and miss TBH. I have had plenty of gold ones that have a hallmark at odds (although usually only by a year) with the movement number date.
If you really want to be sure of an accurate birth year (and month) watch you can't beat Seiko.
Cheers,
Neil.
99.99% of the guys who buy and sell watches here are great to deal with and wouldn't dream of trying to pass on an Omega that was less than 100% legitimate. They'd be found out and exposed extremely quickly if they did.
Why not try a post in the WTB (want to buy) section. I'm not sure if you can yet as you might need to reach 50 posts first, however once you get chatting that particular milestone will fly by.
Cheers,
Gary
Thanks I'll look into WTB. I'd seen the Sales page, didn't realise I could post a request, that's brilliant.
I'll feel confident about buying from amongst a community rather than the great auction house in the sky.
I'd hope to be a good neighbour here, but can't impart any watch knowledge at all I'm afraid. If anyone needs to know about Spanish road bikes I'm ye man!
You'll fit in nicely then David as most of us know bugger all about watches anyway :lol:Originally Posted by david woodhead

Welcome to the forum David!
ps I used to know an Anglican Bishop with your name - not you is it?? If it is.....I can assure you that the money was just resting in my account!! :?
Not me Birchgra.
Hmmm, I wonder what kind of watch a Bishop would be sporting?
Thanks for this. Any idea what happened during the unlisted years? 1983 is of particular interest!Originally Posted by Omegary

1983 was obviously a very quiet year in terms of production and sales and is presumably covered in the 45'000'000 serial numbers. Looks like things picked up nicely in the following year though.Originally Posted by PCP

That's overwhelming Jon Kenney, thank-you.
Interesting to see there was one specific change that happened in '71, so it could be deduced if I find a model of that variety that it is definitely not older than that vintage.
I could of course end up with a '72 or after by this measure alone, but with the serial number specification as well it's looking promising for my quest.
It may be foolishly romantic to want to wear a timepiece that's the same age as myself. Anybody else followed this path, or am I just being daft?
You're not alone David, do a search for 'birth year watches' and you'll see what I mean :wink:Originally Posted by david woodhead

Now I feel comfortably sane Omegary, the affliction is clearly common enough.
As for birth month watches, that's a challenge too far for me. Maybe save that for my 50th?!

All they need from you is the serial/movement number. Info on how to obtain one can be found on Omega's website. I've done it for 2 of my Omega to clarify when those watches were made.

Thanks for this. Any idea what happened during the unlisted years? 1983 is of particular interest![/quote]
Dennis Wilson the only member of the Beach Boys who could surf died; he drowned......
That's really interesting Africoz, and something I will pursue as long as it's not silly money.
It's interesting to imagine that a watch has been knocking about having adventures on various wrists for all these years, making it's inevitable journey to me.
While a minty example that had been kept in a safe would be glorious, I also like the idea of it having a patina and being weathered, a bit like me!
Welcome to the forum.
I`m a big fan of vintage Omegas (owned several, still got a few) and I wish you look in your search, although I don`t understand the birth-year thing at all with watches.

Thanks walkerwek1958, this forum looks like I'm on the right road, learnt a lot already just from this single thread.
There's a Speedie serial number 32xxxxxxx who's seller believes it to be a 1971.
This would not follow Roman Hartmann's guide, but does agree with the ones on chronomaddox.
The case back interestingly has "ST 71" under the 145.002 and the seller believes that's an indication of year of manufacture.
I'm a complete novice so all Omega advice highly valued.
Here's a photo from inside of mine, clearly a 32 but Bienne confirm it was made in 1971.....
PM'd
I'll think what you'll find with a lot of Omegas is the movements are made in batches. So the movement itself will date to 1970 but the watch wasn't actually assembled until a year later.Originally Posted by stoneyloon
There's usually a difference between the date on the movement and the actual date sold as confirmed by an Omega "Extract from the Archives". All a bit confusing I know but when you think of the logistics it makes far more sense to manufacturer batches of movements rather than building to order.

Oh, we're talking about watches?! :DOriginally Posted by Omegary
Interesting topic, and I've just noticed that Omega removed their "date your watch" PDF on their vintage site here : http://www.omegawatches.com/spirit/hist ... s-database (that new site went up a few months ago and the PDF was still there) so there may be some confusion about the dates.
I was talking to an Omega watchmaker at one of their boutiques the other day and he said that he could have access to the exact date but it required quite a bit of detective work.
As stated above, the movement and cases are made in batches, which may or may not correspond to the 'production' date.
The only way to really know is to get hold of an 'Extract from the Archives' by using this form: http://www.omegawatches.com/spirit/h...ves/order-form
I understand that you used to be able to email the guy and he'd send you the info for free. For whatever reason it now costs 75CHF (approx £54!!).
Actually, as stated above, that will only tell you when the watch was shipped to the reseller, so there's no direct connection to the production date in itself, depending on the stock levels a watch bought in year N may have been produced in N or N-1
I've never seen the Omega extracts as being "free", it's possible that a while back you could get some info via email (like you can with Longines and Ulysse Nardin for instance), but it's highly unlikely they would have mailed you the actual extract from the archives.
I will defer to your superior knowledge, but my understanding was that the watches weren't stockpiled prior to sale, but that the compnent parts were, hence the difference with 78 casebacks and movements for example.Originally Posted by webvan
Given that the information in the Extract is scant, no if you're going to be pedantic, you wouldn't have gotten the 'actual' extract, but they would have emailed you the information from the Extract. Chuck Maddox refers to this facility (obviously going back a few years now) on his website and a select few had the guys direct email address.Originally Posted by webvan
Further to my last I retract my deference - it clearly does say production on the Extract: http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=190306Originally Posted by Clockworx
No deference needed in the first place, we're all in the same boat, I'm positive I saw some certificates only showing the delivery date to the Omega agent, and "Omegary" too based on his message above : "There's usually a difference between the date on the movement and the actual date sold as confirmed by an Omega "Extract from the Archives"."
Will post here when I see one again.
