skoda innit . where else can you drive something with chickens head as its badge? if not then a mazda 6
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
I'd look between either:
- Audi A4 - Avant or saloon, can get one for that price, mileage may be slightly over 60k but not much
- BMW 3 series, albeit the E46 shape
- New Shape Mondeo
- Passat - you can get a 2006 plate one with 56k on the clock 14obhp diesel for 8k
Mate of ours chose the new mondeo as a company car, he had a choice of BMW, Audi and Merc butstill went with the Ford. Lots of his colleagues were quite envious of it once they'd been in it and compared it with thier base spec Audis and the like.
Another mate had the Passat, pretty much like a slightly posher golf inside and should be pretty good reliability wise.
I'd go for the Passat or Mondeo personally.

the mondeo is basically the same motor as the mazda but with a different badge
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
Honda Accord 2.2CTDi? Bought one for the wife and she seems really pleased with it.
can these be had in that price range and low miles. Had one as a courtesy car and was quite impressed...Originally Posted by jonny
Golf GT TDI 140,
Superb for the money and quite sporty too. Quick and hugley economical. I'm getting 600+ miles on a tank...
5 adults will always be a bit of a squeeze in a saloon or estate sat in the middle.
What about a focus c or s max?

A skoda has been suggested and a Golf...personally i would be looking at a Seat Leon.
you would get a decent 2.0 FR for that money (same 140ps engine as the Golf), They have a better interior than the Skoda, and look sportier, without the premium cost of the Golf.
For instance

The Octavia is the biggest inside of the VAG A series platforms (Golf, Leon, A3, Octavia) and usually cheaper too the boot is massive so if its four people plus luggage that might matter. The bigger Superb (which is essentially a long wheelbase Passat) is also quite good but perhaps less fun.
Dunno about the Mondeo/Mazda 6 option but you do hear a lot of good things about them.
Thanks for the suggestions guys, but please bear in mind I regularly seat four or five adults; the Golf, Leon, V50 and even the BMW 3 Series are all a little too small for this.
Mazda 6 is a no unfortunately, the last one I had was completely rotten underneath and I had to sell it quick. Fave suggestions so far are the Mondeo and the Skoda (Superb). Keep 'em coming please! :)
Skoda
Have you considered a SsangYong Rodius. Not the most ecomical, but a great looking car for the money.... :D

Push start? I would have expected better from Lexus. :wink:2006 LEXUS IS 220D 4DR FLSH 1 OWNER 12 MONTHS MOT PUSH START
No. :(Originally Posted by Gilly
You didn't mention age. A garage near me has been trying to sell a 2003 Mercedes 2.7 TDi auto (I know you said no autos) for around £5k for ages and it's not high mileage. The old shape (pre-2007) C class is much cheaper than it should be and you can even get a C320 for around your budget and that's remarkably economical for the engine size and damned quick too.

Whole chunks of my life come under the heading "it seemed like a good idea at the time".
BMW 530d Sport (E39 old shape) from 2003, around £6k - superb car, won't depreciate much further.
Might get an early E60 one for around £8k if lucky :)
heres a wild card you can get a lot of alfa for that sort of money
VW Touran. Extraordinarily boring to drive but meets all your criteria easily. Interior is rather good I think, very versatile, though to be fair I haven't looked at many others in the small MPV class.
Bentley Continental GT thats quite a nice runabout
And loose most of it immediately after you have bought it :lol:Originally Posted by markie3182

Take a good look at the Mondeo, cheap to run and maintain, decent build,.....and more importantly.... a really decent drive!!
Skoda every time. Was in the same financial position as you a year or so back, that is had £8k to spend, had to be reliable, economical NOT French.Originally Posted by jd
Now I like cars. And watches of course...
Best car i had was a BMW 5 series from nearly new. But, times and careers change and needs must, as they say. (Who ARE they?)
SO bought a cheap Merc C Class estate. Sadly, what a dog. Mechanicals, and rust. rust , rust rust! Dealer was great but got rid - still under MB warranty - and had £8k to spend. Best value I found was a Skoda Octavia. I don't want to like it. I don't think I love it. But respect it, yes I do. It's great. As comfy as a comfy thing that's won a highly commended in a comfy competition, reliable - I've done 20K miles in a year, narry a hiccup, and does 53 to the gallon. And best of all, it's anonymous. And cheap to service. People let you out of side turnings. It doesn't get keyed in pub car parks. Don't start me on THAT!
Get over the badge. It's a great car.
Tell us what you buy!
Barry
Another vote for an Octavia. I didn't really think much of then until my sister got one which she has happily abused for a few years and the thing hasn't put a foot wrong. Really good specification, build quality, cheap to run and if my sister hasn't managed to destroy it then it's worthy of being put in a museum.
Jaguar X-Type.......I have a low mileage example that fits your criteria and may be up for sale shortly :)
Perhaps a VW Passat or possibly a Mondeo?
Paul
Just replaced my Passat with a new Superb, and bought my wife a new Octavia a few months ago. I heartily recommend either Skoda, the best value reliable car you can buy imho.
Unfortunately was given Skoda as a company car when I lived in the Czech Republic, tin can on wheels. I would be more worried about VW's and Audi's having Skoda bit's in them.Originally Posted by jd
Just as an asides the company I was working for bought a Skoda facility which I visited a few times, it was like stepping back 50 years and there were some parts stamped VAG. The car was that bad the first time I came home I took my own car back with me and gave them the Skoda back

I'd suggest having a look at the Honda Accord.
Given your emphasis on reliability you won't do a lot better and for your budget you should get a 3-4 yr old (facelift) 2.2 i-CTDi Sport or Exec.

Have you considered Vauxhall? I know Mr. Clarkson HATES them with a passion, but I've been running a Vectra 1.9 Sri CDti (150) for the past 15 months, and it hasn't let me down once. Granted it's fairly basic, no rear elec windows or leather, but it is fairly rapid and reasonable on juice, and if cost a consideration, servicing costs are not too bad either.
At the end of the day, if you buy a prestige mark (Alfa, Audi, BMW, Lexus, Volvo, VW, apologies to those I've missed) you'll pay for parts and insurance. You pays your money.....
Buy a crap car and a nice watch!
Life's too short for crap cars, or crap watches :D
