Based purely on the main shots of each...the IWC but quite a margin for me.
In a bit of a quandry :? (Nothing new there my wife says! )
Still selling most of the old collection and am keeping 3 or 4 keepers. The DSSD, Breitling for Bentley Motors, Tag Grande Carerra chrono and the Orange PO chrono. I think there is room for one more top end (for me) piece and two have caught my eye.
The Panerai Luminor chrono Daylight and IWC Spitfire double chronograph.
Now i know its a personal choice but which one would you knowledgeable gents go for? They are priced around the same mark and each would be keeper.
Cheers
Chris
ps not sure if links are allowed but Watches.Co.Uk have one of each
pps if any other suggestions for the same cash let me know

No contest - IWC Doppelchronograph for me :)
Have to agree, IWC is the nicer, though the doppel case is awkward with the extra pusher. I'd actually go for the non doppel model.
The Daylight is toooo busy :(
Is the non doppel 42mm as opposed to 44mm?Originally Posted by shadowman

The 3713 Doppel is 42mm, as is the 3717 "non doppel".Originally Posted by norris

IWC without a shadow of a doubt. Stunning watch  !

I'd much rather have an IWC.
Definitely the Panerai, there's nothing else like it. The IWC is far too 'ordinary' :D
The IWC is a beautiful classic watch, though a bit generic IMO. I like it a lot, I just do not hunger for it, if you understand.
Between the IWC and PAM, I would go for a Panerai, but not the chrono in question. It is a bit too busy for me. To me, PAM is all about the clean simple designs.
Good luck what ever you choose. Considering the cost of the two watches in question, you have the potential/funds to buy a beautiful watch. There are so many out there.

IWC for me ...and exactly what Im wearing now :) ...except on the famous bracelet, rather than the leather .....
I often look at Panerai, but most of them look too big on my wrists and there dosent seem to be such a selection of smaller 40mm models ...and perhaps a bit toooo showy for me "look at me, Ive got a *big* expensive watch on" whereas IWC are much more discreet IMO
I think its got to be the Panerai.

IWC as the movie connection kills the Panerai for me
Respect the past, live the present, protect the future
I have to say ( and it's totally irrational) I'd go for the IWC.
NO reason other than I rather like them, nothing at all wrong with Panerai, I just prefer the IWC. I guess life's like that sometimes :)
cheers
Bill
For a change I would go IWC
When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you.........
I'd go IWC as well.
+1 The daylight is a bit OTT for me, if you can look outside of a chrono there are some lovely pams, that said the doppel is a beauty.Originally Posted by rabbitinheadlights
I totally "get" Panerai and have owned several - go for the IWC. It has more style, more subtlety, and more class. It will survive generations and retain all of it's great qualities. The Panerai is nice and a little bit interesting but just doesn't cut it in a grown up world 8)
Gray
iwc 8) 8) 8)
I'm a big Panerai fan, but the IWC trounces these Daylights by a country mile. Especially the Doppel chronos 8)
Are you specifically after a chrono? If not how about adding a wee bit more for what I think is almost the best of both worlds with a Big Pilot?
I absolutely love mine. Like a Panerai it has the chunky case and nice clear dial, and can be dressed up or down with a strap change, but it also has the amazing IWC movement and anti-magnetic caging. 8)
I have say based purely on looks, I prefer the IWC. I do prefer the simpler Panerai to more busy ones.
I agree IWC BUT
I would go for the earlier doppler 3713 or 3711 models....they hold their price much better than the follow on 3717
either way .... IWC.....a good choice

Ivan

IWC in a heartbeat - timeless classic, Panerai I can see come and go  )IMHO

A 3717 went on the bay yesterday... went up for sales and was gone within hours (on steel bracelet as well for 2300 which sounded like a pretty good deal to me..
I've got a strong yearning for one of these now!!!

Of the two, the IWC. But I am a Panerai nut, so would urge you to look at some of the other models. Maybe the new 3 day in house power reserves? Or, if you like chronos, check out the now discontinued 40 mm 72 or 74..nice!
Anyway, best of luck with whatever you choose!
Another vote for the IWC here. Someday I'll manage to get my hands on one...
The Panerai is a bit fussy for me. Make it one of the Manifatturas that reminds me of the old Heuer Camaro and I'd be in a right quandry though.
Thanks for all the opinions. I like them both equally but it look like i can get a much better deal on the Panerai :D (not from watches.co.uk)
Chris
Still open to opinions though as deal not quite done!!
Unless you get a 50% discount on the Panerai get the IWC.Originally Posted by norris
Ok I am exaggerating, get the IWC anyway.
Has got to be the IWC for me a great watch that is very good looking.
panerai is just for those great people in the land off the free, home off the brave who have no cultural heritage off their own and wish to borrow it from "the old country" wich an hollywood actor (sly) started in the first place.. a lot off hype, but also a lot off heritage, i'll give them that.... but for me, it's IWC all the way, afterall it was started by an american who's wish it was to become a SWISS watchmaker, and the best in that.. not a yankee looking for another war toy..
i'll get my coat..
Both are great watches, Panerai Start before Iwc a little after but both stunning watches and premium quality of craftmanship.
I like Big Pilot is in mi list !!!!
that is a tough decision ... both are lovely
