Thread: Momentus day for me !!!

    Momentus day for me !!!

After 23 years in the RAF, today was my last day in uniform.........(apart from the nurses one I put on at a weekend)

    Q) What am I looking forward to the most on civvie street ?

    A) Being able to grow my hair along with some massive lamb chop sideburns :)

Well, after nearly a quarter of a century suffering from sideburn envy my Noddies are up for a well deserve re-vamp

While searching for burners I came across this snipet of information http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sideburns and a nice little bit of info for the Navy boys too

Now just got to decide on a style.

Elvis is an obvious choice but Puskins chops are defo contender.

Have a vote and help decide the fate of my future Burner profile :D

    Elvis

Why the need to grow sideburns - nasty - and assuming you joined up at 17 and left after 23 years you are 40!! In which case DON'T DO IT - as it will add at least another 10 years.

If you must then do the Evis, however you will need a white cloak and flares and die sitting on the bog.

Get a grip man :D civvy street will not thank you

Something instantly drew my eye towards Herbert Spencer's. I think it's the chopped off bit at the bottom that does wonders for his jawline :D

Pushkin. Seems to combine a mature feel a modern touch.

I voted for Pushkin, Spencer looks fine too but in my view burners should not encroach on the chin region at all.

I always liked the term "bugger grips" for burners btw!

I didn't realise that buggers' grips were outlawed in the RAF.

I would have thought that Herbert Spencer's would afford more purchase  .
    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

Definitely the [s:3ey3905g]Paul Whitehouse[/s:3ey3905g]Herbert Spencer look.

The underchin bit allows for one-handed use of the Buggers' Grips. :pale:

I think you get more "big eared boys" in those services where bugger grips are outlawed.

Pushkin gets my vote Carl

I've been out the Army nearly 10 years and still love the novelty of sporting big sideburns and other facial hair.

It's the just because you can feeling.

However I've moved onto beards at the moment.

You left out the 'friendly mutton chops' Carl, or the Burnside as it's sometime referred too, this would be my preference.

These might be useful references too.

Well done. I hope all goes well.

About the chops. Try them all serially (well, simultaneous would actually be better, if you could manage it).

    Best wishes,
    Bob

As one former RAF person to another, well you will be tomorrow, may I suggest that if you are going for the look why not follow the originator.

Go for a General Ambrose Burnside special!

Been there, done that. You'll grow them and get sick of them and then grow your hair down to your arse, get sick of that and go back to your military haircut.

I have to say, of all the things I could think of after 23 years of service - looking like a 70's throw back would not be one of them :P

Re: Momentus day for me !!!

    Congrats on your retirement!

I retired from teaching and school administration in June of 2008. For the past 15 years I had the quasi-mil buzzed haircut that is so popular in the USA right right now, mainly because of the low maintenance in getting out of the house on time. I got tired of looking like a little boy or a military wannabe in a country where many young men talk tough, but too few serve.

I decided in November of 2008 that I was old, fat, and lame but I had good hair, so I let it grow. 14 months later, I'm glad that I did. It is past my shoulders now, and time to start evening the ends, but it is here to stay. I get ribbed about going back to the 60s, but mostly it is by the jealous baldies. I'm used to the teasing because I've had a beard for years and have put up with comments from the downy-cheeked set who couldn't grow a beard with rogaine.

You can always shave if yo hate them, but you won't have to always wonder, "What if . . .?" Go for it.
