It’s obviously not ideal for every solution but I fitted the Defender with a removable steering wheel plus it has an alarm and immobiliser.
Seems to work a charm for an easy to nick vehicle parked...

I think most aluminium inserts are held in place by tension. I have never had a new watch where the insert was originally held in with tape.
Tape is generally used for poor fitting replacement...
