A lively influx of Rolex to start the year...

While some on tz-uk are a little fed up with "Rolex overload," the title of this thread should have stopped them joining us here. I thought anyone else might like to see some recent acquisitions that I've just posted on a more specialist forum.

"Among a sea of mainstream Oyster Perpetuals these little pearls have so far joined me in 2017, all full sets except the 6536/1 :

The 1655 is a Mark IV dial, identifiable by the combination of T SWISS <25 T text at the bottom and this distinctive E at the start of EXPLORER :

LVs seem to have gone bananas and one rarely sees them these days, so it was time to pick one up. If an earlier specimen crosses my path then I will probably (mirabile dictu!) sell one.

I've had a couple of 6263s and a 3-colour Paul Newman before. The latter did nothing for me, but I regretted not having a simpler Cosmograph dial in the mix. This 3.6m example from 1976 is not quite as I would like, came from a professional soccer player (which excites me not one iota), but has a pleasing set :

Sadly a service dial and bezel on the 6536/1, which is a 200,000 case number from early 1957 :

...but it was the right price and I do already have one with original dial and red triangle bezel to console me :

A very nice influx by any standards.
All four are exceptional.Personally the LV has never excited me and have passed up many an opportunity to acquire when they were sane prices but alas I never did take one up.
Am really surprised at how it has shot up in popularity.

Personally, I just do not see the appeal of the Kermit (or the Hulk for that matter) but that is just me, it seems. The popularity of these watches is presumably a key factor in driving up their prices ?

The other three watches are absolutely lovely though and I would be delighted to add any of them to my fledgling collection.

The dial on the Cosmograph is sublime !

OOI, does some of the lume on the others looks a bit patchy when looked at high magnification, or is it just me ?

@ Haywood: regarding the service dial on the 6536/1 would you care to give an estimate of how old that is, also as an estimate how many of them at that age are you likely to see still with the original dial?

I cannot be certain but think it was fitted in the 1980s. Neither that date, nor how much earlier it might have been made, would I be confident of without further evidence or research.

I would expect perhaps between a third and a half half now to have a service dial in place (most replaced years ago, before value was attributed to the original). Of those with an original dial, many will be in a poor condition.

Thank you. I'd love to be able to find a late 50's, all-original in good condition but the likelihood - and the price - is going to render it to a pipe-dream, sadly.

What fantastic examples.....

I have arrived at the watch appreciation party rather late.....the DRSD that was bought for me second hand for a combination of 18th and 21st birthdays was a 'lucky' move....

Having just started to understand its fragility (it's with Steven Hale currently for a bit of sympathetic fettling) and value, I am now possibly on the look out for a daily wearer (albeit, it has been with me around the World for the past 35 years, so I am tempted to just keep it on my wrist.....).

Is there a bible or definitive guide that people refer to when dealing with vintage Rolex? I'm pretty OK with modern pieces but struggle with vintage Rolex. Would love to get more familiar with some of the models, dials, etc

I would not get to wound up over the 1655. It does look cool without doubt but the "disco dial" which a 24 hour dial super imposed over a 12 hour one is plain bloody confusing to read. I have one and its a total pain in the arse.

I have two plain watches (39mm Explorer and Sub) that are a pleasure to wear and two others (16520 and 1655) that are just not practical for day to day wearing. I think they are both going to have to go.
