Tales from the Workshop: Chassis back from the powder coater

As per title. Around 6, the trailer with the chassis was rolled into the workshop. The freshly powder coated chassis looks stunning. I took some pics with my iPhone about an hour ago, using the lamps on the ceiling of the shop. So the pics aren't too bright. I will try to get better, clearer pics tomorrow morning.

Now, with the chassis back, there's no reason not to start assembling: lots of shiny little parts a have been cleaned, bought, replaced and quite a few items are pre-installed (like the diff), waiting on the shelf for a new lease of life. I will give you an update every now and then.

Will try. But... nothing's to report when you forget your phone like I did today. Oh well, a quiet day. The chassis has several cavities (due to the design). First step was to out any form of sandblasting material: sand or similar. After that, it was to take out the tap & dye set. After powder coating some holes need to be rethreaded because they're partly filled with coating. It's a laborious (is that the correct term?) job: carefully cleaning it out. After cleaning it's time to insert a long thin nozzle into the cavities and fill the whole of the chassis with wax.

We're about the undertake an experiment with a product we're not familiar with: http://www.mike-sander.de According to German car magazines, this product outperforms any other rust prevention product. The owner of the car was impressed by what he'd seen on other cars and we're interested in trying something new.

Sometimes you’re fed up with the sticky wax and its fumes. Yesterday was spent on other freshly powdered parts:
- soft top frame
- diff housing (note the purple Bushes!)

The final pic is simply an overview of small parts waiting for attention

I really enjoy your threads Menno.

Looking forward to this one, and in particular your view on the rust proofing/prevention as I was in the process of considering waxoyling the steel bits on the TT.

I`m a big fan of Waxoyl (or similar) in cavities, once the surface is coated it shouldn`t rust in the future. However, on exposed areas it can abrade away and ought to be re-applied regularly if the car gets used a lot. Applying it isn't a pleasant job.......but you're not supposed to enjoy it!

I’ve currently got my mates Vw carman ghia rolling chassis lying in my garage while he sprays the shell, it’s rust free and straight but not nearly as pretty as yours, can’t wait to tell him.

^^^ this ^^^ I personally like the use of 3M's stone guard paint.The underside of the car, the inner wings etc. All treated can be painted in the body colour afterwards, with sensible use of Waxoil/Dinitrol ML/Mike Sander's Fett on certain areas: e.g. where the outer and inner wing meet.

Can I ask a question?.... I'm undergoing a DIY refurb (slowly... VERY slowly!) and have a crusty looking diff housing. Your pic above grabbed me - the silver finish is perfect that you've achieved there.

Any recommendations as to how to bring it back like that ie what products/paints you've used there? Its completely unpainted at present and oxidised. You can see it in the centre of this pic...

Blasting with glass beads, the smaller the better. After that, the housing was coated with a durable clear lacquer from Innotec. In short: the stuff used on alloy wheels. Not the rubbish DIY paint, but proper paint like Innotec’s.

Anyway... another week has gone by. In Total a full 3 days work on the chassis shows some progress. You can’t see a lot done when it’s down to cleaning out the screw and bolt threads!

But yesterday was a very productive day! First front suspension items are on and the remaining parts are ready to be assembled. Only one trunnion turned out to be ‘gone’.
When possible, we tend to re-use the original trunnions: the aftermarket ones are all wrong! So we were looking for an original - and we’ve found one.

Last pics shows ‘a box of bits’. Mostly suspension bushes. The content of the box is as expensive as a Seiko MarineMaster...
